It takes more wear than any grass we lay and copes with dry spells, but it has almost no shade tolerance, and shade is common here.

Does your Baton Rouge yard get enough sun for Bermuda?
Check this before anything else. LSU AgCenter rates Bermuda’s shade tolerance as very poor and says it doesn’t grow well in partial or heavy shade. LSU’s shade guidance sets 4 to 6 sunny hours as the floor for most turf, and Bermuda, which LSU says thrives in full sun, wants more than a shaded yard can give.
That rules out a good share of Baton Rouge. A 1996 Forest Service study measured the city’s tree cover at 55%, the highest in its sample. Spend a summer day noting which parts of your lawn are in direct sun and for how long. If the answer is “not much”, St. Augustine for Baton Rouge’s shaded lawns is the better fit, and you can mix the two across one property.

Why pick Bermuda for a sunny Baton Rouge lot?
- 01
It takes a beating
It takes a beating: LSU describes Bermuda’s traffic and wear tolerance as exceptional. It’s the grass on Louisiana’s athletic fields and golf courses.
- 02
It recovers fast
It recovers fast: Bermuda spreads quickly by both runners and underground stems, so worn spots fill back in. Our post on fixing bare, patchy spots in Bermuda covers the rest.
- 03
It handles dry spells
It handles dry spells: It tolerates drier soil than many turfgrasses, which helps in dry stretches between rains.
- 04
It has a local past
It has a local past: NRCS’s description of Deerford soil, found in parts of the city, lists its main use as bermudagrass or carpetgrass pasture. A pasture isn’t a lawn, so treat that as history, not a promise.

How does Bermuda handle wet weather on Baton Rouge silt?
Much of the city’s silt drains slowly below the surface, and two diseases are worth knowing about. Take-all root rot, called bermudagrass decline when it hits Bermuda, is favored by long rainy spells and soil pH above 6.5. Large patch also lists Bermuda as a host, mostly in spring and fall.
So don’t lime past what a soil test asks for, and grade the yard so rain runs off. If your grass is browning in patches, our guide to why Bermuda turns brown and how to fix it walks through the causes.

Bermuda questions from Baton Rouge homeowners
Will my Bermuda turn brown in winter?
Yes, expect it. LSU’s calendar shows warm-season turf dormant from about November to February, and January nights at Baton Rouge’s Metro Airport average about 42 F. Bermuda handles cold better than St. Augustine or centipede, but LSU still calls cold its weak spot. More on that in Bermuda dormancy in Louisiana winters.
How short should I mow it?
LSU says 1 to 2 inches in the growing season. Its older guide recommends a reel mower, especially for anything under an inch.
What eats Bermuda in late summer?
Fall armyworms. LSU says Bermuda is a common target from June to November and a heavy outbreak can wreck a lawn in one night. The LSU fall armyworm page shows what to look for.
What does Bermuda sod cost?
It depends on the yard and the prep. Our Louisiana Bermuda sod cost guide breaks down the factors, and your estimate after the visit gives your real number.
