It spreads slowly, so sod is the way to start, and it dislikes the compacted fine silt found across much of the city.

Who is zoysia right for in Baton Rouge?
- 01
Yards with partial shade
Yards with partial shade: LSU AgCenter ranks zoysia second only to St. Augustine for shade among warm-season grasses, though the exact tolerance varies by variety. It grows well in sun and tolerates partial shade.
- 02
Lawns that get walked on
Lawns that get walked on: LSU says zoysia has high tolerance for wear and traffic. The tradeoff: it recovers slowly once it is damaged.
- 03
Yards that see real winter cold
Yards that see real winter cold: Baton Rouge is zone 9a, with January lows averaging about 42 F at the Metro Airport. Zoysia’s cold tolerance is high compared with the other grasses we lay.

People who like a short, tidy cut
People who like a short, tidy cut: LSU puts zoysia at 1 to 2 inches, with coarse-bladed types higher and fine-bladed types lower.

Why does compaction matter so much on Baton Rouge silt?
LSU says zoysia doesn’t like compacted soil, and that compaction happens more often on fine-textured soils. Baton Rouge’s ground is mostly fine-textured silt formed in loess. The city’s most common soil, Oprairie silt, also has a dense, slow-draining layer below the surface. Zoysia’s roots are shallow, so a hard top layer leaves them nowhere to go.
That makes prep the main event. Breaking up the top layer before the sod goes down gives roots a start, and LSU lists core aeration with sand topdressing as a later fix for winter decline on poorly drained silty lawns. Our post on preparing a lawn for zoysia walks through it, and our Baton Rouge sod installation process covers what we do on the day.
Soil pH matters too. Zoysia prefers slightly acidic ground, ideally pH 6 to 7. Of the soils NRCS maps in the city, Jeanerette silt loam, at a typical 6.3, is the natural match. Oprairie on flat ground averages about 4.3, so a soil test and lime come first there.

What does zoysia ask of you after the first year?
- 01
Keep thatch down
Thatch builds up in zoysia more than in most grasses. LSU warns you can lose a zoysia lawn to it, and its 2007 guide noted that untreated zoysia lawns in south Louisiana often needed replacing after 5 to 7 years. Dethatch or topdress every so often.
- 02
Use a sharp blade
Zoysia’s leaves are stiff and tear under a dull mower. LSU advises a reel mower.
- 03
Feed it lightly
Up to 2 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet a year, split across spring and summer, no more than 1 pound at a time. LSU compares mature zoysia’s appetite to centipede’s.
- 04
Watch for its pests
LSU lists billbugs, nematodes, rust and brown patch, and large patch also attacks zoysia. The LSU AgCenter zoysia page has the detail.

Zoysia questions from Baton Rouge homeowners
Why not plug zoysia to save money?
Because it’s slow. LSU says plugged zoysia can take 2 to 3 years to fill in, though some newer varieties close up in one. Sod covers the ground on day one.
Has zoysia been tested in Baton Rouge?
Yes. LSU AgCenter reports a seeded zoysia did well in a 2008 trial in Baton Rouge. We lay sod, not seed, but it’s a good sign for the species here.
Zoysia or St. Augustine for a shaded yard?
In deeper shade, St. Augustine. Under lighter shade with more foot traffic, zoysia earns a look. Compare with St. Augustine sod in Baton Rouge, or for full sun see Baton Rouge Bermuda sod.
