Federal soil maps show River Ridge built by the Mississippi. Two soil series cover almost all of its dry land, and they behave like two different towns.
Two public spots show the split. Little Farms Playground on S. Park Street maps as Cancienne silt loam, while River Ridge Meditation Park on Jefferson Highway maps as Schriever clay. Unlike neighboring areas built on drained marsh, River Ridge has no muck soils at all, so sinking peat isn’t the worry here. Slow drainage is.

02 · River Ridge
LSU AgCenter says most turfgrasses need 4 to 6 hours of full sun. After soil, that’s the second filter, and it sorts the four grasses quickly:
St. Augustine: The most shade-tolerant warm-season grass LSU ranks, though even it thins in dense shade. Read St. Augustine for River Ridge lots with trees.

03 · River Ridge
River Ridge has no mayor or town council. It’s a census-designated place, so Jefferson Parish government governs it, zoning included. About three in four homes are single-family detached houses, roughly 7 in 10 are lived in by their owners, and more than half went up in the 1960s and 1970s. That means mostly established yards, since very few homes here are newer than 2010.
Water is the other local story. The Schriever clay stays saturated within about 6 inches of the surface from December through April in a normal year, and the area averages a little over 63 inches of rain a year, with June the wettest month. LSU ties winter turf decline to poorly drained, low-lying ground, so a low corner that puddles in February needs grading before sod.
04 · River Ridge

River Ridge sits in USDA hardiness zone 9b, where average extreme lows run 25 to 30 F. January nights average about 46 F at the nearest NOAA station, so cold matters most for St. Augustine and centipede.
