Carville soil is calcareous, and the federal survey’s typical surface reading for it is pH 7.8. That pushes the choice toward grasses that put up with neutral to sweet ground, and away from centipede, which wants acid soil.
The NRCS describes Carville layers below 12 to 30 inches as saturated from December through June in normal years. A lawn that looks fine in October can sit on soggy roots by February.
The east bank of St. John Parish moves stormwater through gravity canals toward Lakes Pontchartrain and Maurepas, and the parish notes that water slows wherever it has to cross railroad tracks or roads. Low spots in a yard hold water longer here, which is why grading comes up on almost every visit.
Reserve, home of the closest NOAA weather station, logs January nights averaging 42.9 F. That’s a few degrees colder than the metro airport station farther east, so we’re more careful with frost-tender grass and late-season installs.
