We help you pick the grass, measure the yard, deliver fresh-cut sod and lay it, so you deal with one company from the first call to the first mow.

Most people call us with a specific problem: a new build sitting on bare fill, a lawn lost to drought or chinch bugs, or a yard that has to look good before a sale. Wherever you’re starting from, the estimate is free, and we walk the yard with you before we price anything.

01 · Sod Installation

How much sod does your yard need?

Sod is sold by the pallet. A pallet typically covers 400 to 500 square feet, depending on the farm that cut it (HomeGuide, October 2025). We plan around 450 square feet per pallet and add about 5% for the cuts you lose along beds, walkways and curves.

Here’s how that works on a real yard. A 2,400 square foot backyard plus 5% is 2,520 square feet. Divide by 450 and you get 5.6, so you’d order 6 pallets.

To measure your own yard, break it into rectangles, multiply length by width for each one and add them up. Then subtract flower beds, patios and the driveway. The calculator at the top of this page does the pallet math for you. Send us your number with the estimate request and we’ll confirm it on site.

Which grass should you lay in South Louisiana?

We install the four warm-season grasses that do best in our heat and humidity. Each one trades something for something else, so the right pick depends on how much sun your lawn gets and how hard you use it.

In most New Orleans yards, shade decides it. If live oaks cover part of the lawn, Bermuda will thin out underneath them, and St. Augustine is usually the better call. A sunny yard that takes a beating from kids and dogs suits Bermuda or zoysia. Not sure which side of that line you’re on? Count the hours of direct sun the lawn gets on a summer day and tell us during the estimate.

Zoysia Moderate High High Low Showpiece lawns that take real use

03 · Sod Installation

What our sod installation includes

Every job follows the same five steps, from the first visit to the first watering.

  • 01

    Yard visit and measurements

Yard visit and measurements: We walk the property with you, measure it and talk through which grass fits your sun and use.

  • 02

    Site prep

Site prep: Depending on the yard, we clear old grass and weeds, loosen the top layer and fill low spots. Your estimate spells it out.

  • 03

    Fresh-cut sod, delivered

Fresh-cut sod, delivered: LSU AgCenter advises laying sod within 24 hours of delivery, so we plan delivery and installation together.

  • 04

    Laying and rolling

Laying and rolling: Seams staggered like brickwork, edges cut tight around beds and walks, then rolled so every piece touches soil.

  • 05

First watering and a care plan

First watering and a care plan: The lawn gets its first soak before we leave, plus a simple watering schedule for the weeks ahead.

What we check before we quote

Two yards of the same size can need very different work. Here’s what we look at on the visit, and why each item matters:

  • 01

    Drainage and low spots

Drainage and low spots: Ground that holds water after a heavy rain will drown new sod. LSU AgCenter recommends a 1% to 2% slope so water runs off.

  • 02

    Hours of sun

Hours of sun: This is what decides between St. Augustine and the sun-loving grasses.

  • 03

    What’s growing there now

What’s growing there now: Weeds and old turf left under new sod compete with it from day one.

  • 04

Grade at the slab, beds and walkways

Grade at the slab, beds and walkways: Sod adds height, so we check that the finished lawn will sit flush with your edges and drain away from the house.

  • 05

    Access

Access: Gate width and the path from the street decide how pallets get to the backyard.

  • 06

    Irrigation coverage

Irrigation coverage: If you have sprinklers, we look for dry corners the heads don’t reach, because new sod in those spots needs hand watering.

05 · Sod Installation

When is the best time to lay sod in Louisiana?

Sod can go down in any month in Louisiana, but LSU AgCenter expects the best establishment from April through September. Warm soil helps the roots knit into the ground quickly, and every grass we install is actively growing then.

Summer installs work well here, but the first two weeks of watering matter even more when afternoons hit the 90s. If you’re planning a project outside that window, talk to us first. Whether it makes sense depends on the grass and the yard, and we’ll tell you honestly if waiting for spring is the better move.
