02 · Metairie
Parish rules, no city hall: Metairie is unincorporated, so Jefferson Parish government writes the zoning and tree rules that touch your yard.
Two tree districts: Old Metairie and the Metairie Ridge Tree Preservation District both exist to protect the existing canopy, which means a lot of lawns here have to live with shade for good.
A front-yard planting minimum: In the Old Metairie conservation district, at least 20% of the required front or corner side yard has to be living planted material, and grass counts.
Mostly 1960s and 1970s houses: The median Metairie home was built around 1972, so most of our jobs here replace a tired lawn around mature trees and old beds, not a bare new-build lot.
03 · Metairie
LSU AgCenter ranks it first among warm-season grasses for shade. If your yard sits under the canopy near Metairie Road, start with St. Augustine sod for Metairie yards.
