The catch: it hates soggy low ground and dry spells alike, and it won’t take much foot traffic.

Why does Baton Rouge’s acidic soil suit centipede?
Centipede is the one grass we lay that prefers sour ground. LSU AgCenter puts its ideal pH between 5 and 6, and says that above pH 7 the leaves can turn yellow. Compare that with what NRCS records for the top layer of the city’s main soils:
LSU’s Koske says centipede survives at pH 5 and prefers the higher fives, so a flat Oprairie yard may need less correction than St. Augustine would. Test first. You can pick up a sample box at the LSU AgCenter East Baton Rouge Parish office, 9050 Airline Highway, Suite 120, or call it at (225) 389-3055.

| Soil inside Baton Rouge | Typical top-layer pH | Centipede fit |
|---|---|---|
| Oprairie silt, gentle slopes | about 5.5 | Right in its range |
| Oprairie silt, flat ground | about 4.3 | A bit too sour; a soil test shows how much lime, if any |
| Calhoun and Frost silt loams | about 5.1 to 5.5 | pH suits it; drainage doesn’t |
| Sharkey clay, near the river | about 6.8, up to 8.4 | Risky; leaves can yellow where pH tops 7 |

Where does centipede fail in Baton Rouge?
- Low, wet flats: LSU says centipede is among the grasses most often hit by winter decline in poorly drained, low-lying soil. NRCS data puts the wet layer as close as about 9 inches down on Calhoun and Frost ground in the city at its wettest.
- Alkaline fill and river clay: Above pH 7, LSU says centipede may yellow. Sharkey clay near the Mississippi can run well past that, and so can any fill that tests above 7.
- Foot traffic: Centipede doesn’t tolerate traffic or compaction. LSU says stressed leaves turn purple to red, a sign to move the play area elsewhere.
- Dry spells: LSU turf guidance calls it one of the most drought-sensitive turfgrasses around. Even with close to 62 inches of rain a year in Baton Rouge, a hot dry stretch can stress it.

How do you keep centipede decline away?
LSU describes centipede decline as a complex, lethal problem that shows up as large dead or yellow patches in spring. It’s tied to three habits people fall into with this grass, so avoid them.

- 01
Don’t overfeed it
Give it roughly 1 to 2 pounds of nitrogen for every 1,000 square feet over a full year, and never more than 2. Skip fall nitrogen, which LSU says sets centipede up for freeze damage. Go easy on phosphorus too.
- 02
Keep it short
Mow at 1 to 2 inches and don’t let thatch pile up, since LSU links heavy thatch to decline. LSU’s Koske calls tall mowing on centipede very dangerous, and LSU ties tall cuts to winter freeze damage.
- 03
Water through droughts
Drought stress feeds decline. In a dry spell, water once or twice a week with at least an inch each time, early in the morning.

Centipede questions from Baton Rouge homeowners
Is centipede really “lazy man’s grass”?
That’s its nickname, earned by needing less mowing and feeding. But lazy doesn’t mean careless: too much fertilizer or a high cut is what kills it.
Will centipede grow under my trees?
In light to moderate shade, yes. LSU ranks it third for shade, behind St. Augustine and zoysia. For heavy shade, look at St. Augustine on shaded Baton Rouge lots.
Can I spray weeds in it like any other lawn?
Be careful. LSU says centipede is sensitive to many common herbicides, so read the label for centipede before you spray.
