01 · Slidell
Dig a spade into almost any yard in town and you’ll hit fine sandy loam, not clay. Federal soil maps put roughly four of every five acres inside the city on two soil series, Myatt and Stough, and the city’s own 2040 plan says the same thing. Spot checks in Olde Towne, along Gause Boulevard, on the west side and on the south side all came back Myatt or Stough.
Three traits of that ground shape every lawn we lay here:
It’s acidic: The topsoil runs about pH 5.0 to 5.3, and the subsoil is more acidic still. Most turfgrasses want more lime than that, and one of them doesn’t.
Water sits close to the surface: In the wet season the water table can rise to within 6 to 12 inches of the top on the main soils, because the land is so flat.
There’s a hardpan in places: Stough soil carries a dense layer called a fragipan from about 15 inches down, and it stops water draining deeper.
Muck is rare: Soft marsh soil shows up only in isolated spots along the southern city line and Bayou Bonfouca.
02 · Slidell

The city says it plainly: much of Slidell is low-lying and flat, so every property is potentially at risk of flooding. About 55% of the city sits in FEMA flood zone AE. Water comes from three directions, according to the city: hurricane surge, back flooding of Bayou Bonfouca when Lake Pontchartrain rises, and local drainage that can’t keep up in heavy storms.
Every watershed in town drains toward Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Borgne, through retention ponds and pump stations on the southwest edge. A lawn helps or hurts that system. Shape the yard so rain moves off it, and keep grass clippings out of the street, since the city warns that clippings and leaves can clog drains and push water back into yards.

Soil first: On ground this acidic, a soil test tells you how much lime your grass needs. The LSU AgCenter St. Tammany Parish office has sample boxes and instructions for the LSU soil lab.
City rules before dirt moves: Slidell’s Planning Department wants a Fill Plan when fill is brought in and a Tree Removal Permit before trees come out. We’ll flag either one if your job needs it.
