LSU AgCenter ranks it the most shade-tolerant warm-season grass, but the city’s sour silt and zone 9a winters mean it needs some setup before the first pallet comes off the truck.

Will St. Augustine grow under Baton Rouge’s tree canopy?
Usually, yes, up to a point. Baton Rouge topped the range in a 1996 USDA Forest Service study of urban tree cover, at 55%, so plenty of yards here run on filtered light. St. Augustine handles moderate shade better than any other warm-season lawn grass, though LSU is clear that it still performs best in full sun.
The limit is dense shade. LSU puts it plainly: even St. Augustine won’t grow well there. Most turf needs 4 to 6 hours of direct sun, and a spreading live oak can block nearly all of it. LSU’s older lawn guide suggests thinning trees or raising the lower limbs to 6 to 8 feet to let light in.
Two habits help shaded St. Augustine hold on. Mow at 3 to 3.5 inches there, against 2.5 to 3 inches in sun, so each blade keeps more leaf. And feed the shaded part lighter, no more than half a pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet at a time.

Does Baton Rouge soil need lime before St. Augustine?
Often. LSU puts St. Augustine’s ideal pH around 6.5, and one LSU agent notes that in many yards lime will be needed. NRCS soil data for the city shows why.
Don’t guess and overshoot. LSU links take-all root rot in St. Augustine to soil pH above 6.5 combined with long stretches of rain, and Baton Rouge averages close to 62 inches of rain a year. A soil test from the LSU AgCenter lab gives you the right amount.

| Soil inside the city | Typical top-layer pH | What it means for St. Augustine |
|---|---|---|
| Oprairie silt, flat ground | about 4.3 | Well below its ideal; expect lime |
| Calhoun silt loam | about 5.1 | Acidic and poorly drained; lime and grading |
| Jeanerette silt loam | about 6.3 | Close already; test before adding anything |
| Sharkey clay, river floodplain | about 6.8, up to 8.4 | Often at or above target; test before adding lime |

Which pests and diseases hit St. Augustine in Baton Rouge?
- Chinch bugs: LSU calls the southern chinch bug mainly a St. Augustine problem. Damage peaks in mid to late summer on hot, dry, sunny patches with thick thatch. LSU’s chinch bug guide explains a soap flush test, with treatment once you count 25 to 30 bugs in a single square foot.
- Large patch: This fungus shows up in spring and fall when nights sit between 60 and 75 F. On St. Augustine, look for a yellowish ring at the edge of the patch. Water early in the morning.
- Take-all root rot: It thrives in long wet spells and can pass for chinch bug damage, so check for bugs before you treat for either.
- Winter decline: LSU names St. Augustine as one of the two grasses most often hit in wet, poorly drained soil. Low Calhoun and Frost flats in the city fit that description.

Spring
Start mowing at 2.5 to 3 inches once it greens up, never taking more than a third of the blade. LSU’s sample schedule puts the first pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet down in April.
- 02
Summer
A second feeding in June, an optional one in August, and no more than 3 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet for the year. Scout sunny edges for chinch bugs from midsummer on. Our summer St. Augustine care tips go deeper.

Winter
St. Augustine has the lowest cold tolerance of the grasses we lay. Baton Rouge’s 9a winters are colder than the south shore’s, and LSU’s 2007 guide warns that some cold-sensitive varieties shouldn’t be planted north of the New Orleans area. Ask us which type is on your pallet.
