About half the city’s land is Kenner muck, a drained marsh soil that shares the city’s name, and pumps keep its water table only a few feet down. Our crews deliver and install all four warm-season grasses here, and the right one depends on whether your yard sits near the river, in the clay middle or out by the lake.
Why does a Kenner yard change from the river to the lake?
Kenner covers about 15 square miles between the Mississippi River on the south and Lake Pontchartrain on the north. Walk that line and you cross three different kinds of ground. Near city hall on Williams Boulevard and the Rivertown end of Old Kenner, the soil is Cancienne silt loam, a natural levee soil that drains better than the rest of the city, though NRCS still rates it somewhat poorly drained. The middle of town sits on Westwego and Schriever clays, both rated poorly drained. Toward the lake you reach Kenner muck, a drained marsh soil that shares the city’s name and covers about half its land.
