01 · Harahan
Harahan is a small river town. It covers about 2 square miles of land, and roughly a fifth of the area inside city limits is the Mississippi River itself. The federal soil survey splits the dry ground almost evenly between two soils, and you won’t find the soft marsh muck that sits under lakeside parts of the east bank anywhere in town.
One oddity worth knowing: there really is a soil called Harahan clay, but its type location is on the West Bank, and it covers only about 1% of the city. The name tells you nothing about your own yard.

We looked up the soil mapped at the center of several subdivisions recorded in the city’s own parcel records. A center point isn’t your lot, so use this as a first guess and let a soil test and the yard visit settle it.

03 · Harahan
About three in four Harahan homes are owner-occupied, and nearly 8 in 10 are detached single-family houses. The typical home dates from the mid-1970s, and about one in five was built in the 1950s. On a lot that old, the visit tells us more than a tape measure does.
NRCS lists bottomland hardwoods as the native cover on this levee and backswamp land. If big trees shade your lawn today, that pushes the choice toward the shade-tolerant grasses.
The airport weather station about 5 miles northwest averages about 63 inches of rain a year, with June the wettest month. July highs average about 91 F and January lows about 46 F. ZIP 70123 sits in USDA zone 9b.
Harahan sits on levee-protected, pumped ground, and the Jefferson Parish drainage department runs canals, street drains and 72 pump stations across the parish. A low spot inside your own fence is still yours to correct before new sod goes down.
