TurnKey Grass sells, delivers and lays St. Augustine, Bermuda, zoysia and centipede sod from Algiers Point to Lake Vista, with our own crews on every job.

Here’s how we match the grass to the ground, one neighborhood at a time.

01 · New Orleans

Which grass fits which part of New Orleans?

We mapped the federal soil survey against the city’s official neighborhood boundaries. The result is a city where the river side, the middle of the bowl and the lakefront each need a different conversation. Use this as a starting point, then let a soil test and a sun count settle it.

Two things stand out. Lakeview’s drained muck is acid and organic, which can suit centipede sod on New Orleans’ acid lakefront soils in sunny spots that drain after rain. The river-side loam drains better than the clay in the middle of the bowl, and that’s where Bermuda for sunny New Orleans lots earns its keep.

Large oak tree shading a green lawn
Neighborhood What the soil survey shows How it drains Grass we’d look at first
East Carrollton Mostly Cancienne silt loam, a natural-levee soil, with some Schriever clay Somewhat poorly drained, better than the clay Bermuda or zoysia in full sun
Algiers Point Cancienne silt loam and silty clay loam near the river Somewhat poorly drained Bermuda or zoysia in sun, St. Augustine in shade
Audubon and Uptown Schriever clay with Cancienne loam closer to the river Poorly drained on the clay St. Augustine under the oaks
Mid-City Almost all Schriever clay, a shrink-swell backswamp soil Very slow St. Augustine or zoysia, after a pH check
Broadmoor Backswamp clay throughout Very slow, artificially drained St. Augustine on a well-graded yard
Gentilly Terrace About two-thirds Schriever clay, the rest mostly Cancienne silt loam Mixed, lot by lot Depends on the lot, so we test
Lakeview Drained marsh muck, organic and acid, with some backswamp clay Poorly drained, water table held down by pumps Centipede in sun, St. Augustine in shade
Lakeshore and Lake Vista Dredged fill, with no layer data in the survey Unknown until you dig Soil test before we choose

02 · New Orleans

Why does a New Orleans lawn need its own plan?

  • The city drains by pump: The Sewerage and Water Board runs 24 drainage pump stations, and the system can move about half an inch of rain an hour. On slow clay, any low spot holds water long after a storm, so grade comes before grass.
  • Live oak shade: About one public tree in five is a southern live oak, and it’s the most common large tree on the city’s own inventory. Most turf wants 4 to 6 hours of direct sun, which is why St. Augustine for shaded New Orleans yards is so often the answer.
  • Old houses, tight yards: The typical home here dates from around 1960, and close to a third were built before 1940. Narrow side yards and doubles shape how we get pallets to the back.
  • Fill counts as development: The city treats grading and filling as development that needs a permit, so a big regrade starts with a call to Safety and Permits.

How we run a New Orleans sod job

  1. 01

We count the sun with you

On the free yard visit we look at where the oaks throw shade through the day, because that one fact rules grasses in or out.

  2. 02

We look at the soil before the catalog

Lakeview muck and Mid-City clay want different grasses, and a pH reading tells us more than the street address. If you’ve never had a soil test, we’ll point you to the LSU AgCenter office for Orleans Parish.

  3. 03

We plan the path to the backyard

Gate width and the route from the curb decide how the sod reaches the lawn. On a double with a slim side yard, we plan that before delivery day.

  4. 04

We lay it, roll it and water it in

Prep, permits, timing and watering for city yards are all on our sod installation service page.

Lawn questions from New Orleans homeowners

Do you work in Algiers?

Yes. Algiers is part of New Orleans, on the West Bank, and its river-side loam is some of the friendliest ground in the city for a sunny lawn.

What hardiness zone is New Orleans?

Every residential ZIP in the city falls in USDA zone 9b, where the coldest winter nights average 25 to 30 F. Lawns here still brown off in winter: LSU’s calendar shows warm-season turf dormant roughly November to February.

Where can I get my soil tested?

The LSU AgCenter Orleans Parish office at 2000 Lakeshore Drive can point you to sample boxes and the LSU soil lab. Bring the result to your estimate.

Is zoysia a good middle ground?

Often, in part shade on mineral soil. Read about zoysia sod for part-shade New Orleans yards, or compare the two big options in Bermuda vs St. Augustine for New Orleans.
