It takes more traffic than any grass we install and copes with drier soil than most. The trade-offs are real, though: it struggles in shade, and it browns out every winter.

Where does Bermuda do best in Harahan?
LSU AgCenter says Bermuda prefers full sun and rates its shade tolerance as very poor. So the first question on a Harahan lot is trees, and the second is drainage. The river side of town sits on Cancienne silt loam and silty clay loam, under subdivisions like West Imperial and Roseland Park, and it drains better than the Schriever clay toward the back of town.

Open front yards
Open front yards: Full sun from morning to late afternoon is where Bermuda earns its keep.
- 02
Play yards and dog runs
Play yards and dog runs: LSU calls its traffic and wear tolerance exceptional, and it spreads by stolons and rhizomes to fill worn spots.
- 03
Clay lots in the sun
Clay lots in the sun: Royland and Colonial Estates can grow Bermuda too, as long as the prep moves winter water off the yard first.

Under a big tree
Under a big tree: Skip it. Bermuda thins out in partial shade, and St. Augustine for shaded Harahan lots is the better call.

What does Bermuda look like through a Harahan winter?
LSU’s calendar puts warm-season lawns dormant from November through February, and Bermuda goes brown for that stretch. January lows average about 46 F at the airport station northwest of town, and ZIP 70123 is USDA zone 9b. Lack of cold tolerance is Bermuda’s main weakness, according to LSU, although it ranks hardier than St. Augustine and centipede.
A brown winter lawn is normal, and LSU’s calendar shows active growth returning around March. If you lay Bermuda while it’s dormant, LSU says don’t feed it and don’t overseed it with ryegrass that first winter. Our post on Bermuda dormancy in Louisiana winters explains what to expect.

How do you keep new Bermuda sod healthy in Harahan?
| Task | LSU AgCenter guidance | What it means on a Harahan lot |
|---|---|---|
| Mowing | 1 to 2 inches in the growing season; a reel mower works best, especially under 1 inch | Keep it short and regular through the hot months |
| Feeding | Up to 3 pounds of nitrogen for each 1,000 square feet a year, midspring to midsummer, 1 pound at most per round | See our Bermuda fertilizer guide |
| Soil pH | Slightly acid, best at 6 to 7 | River loam tests around 5.7 and back-of-town clay around 7.3, so a soil test tells you which way to adjust |
| Watering | Tolerates drier soil than many turfgrasses | About 63 inches of rain falls in a normal year, so water only in dry spells; read how often to water Bermuda |
| Fall armyworms | Bermuda is a common target from June to November; they can wreck a lawn overnight | Walk the lawn often from June through November |

Bermuda sod questions from Harahan homeowners
Will Bermuda creep into my flower beds?
It can. Bermuda spreads by both stolons and rhizomes, so firm bed edges help. Common Bermuda that invades a St. Augustine, centipede or zoysia lawn has to be treated as a weed.
How soon can the kids and the dog use new Bermuda sod?
Wait until it has rooted into the soil. Our post on how long Bermuda takes to establish covers the timeline and how to test it.
What does Bermuda sod cost for a Harahan yard?
It depends on yard size, prep and access. Our Louisiana Bermuda sod cost guide covers the factors, and your estimate gives the real figure.
