TurnKey Grass installs zoysia across the city. Its slow growth means less mowing, but a scuffed or thin patch stays visible longer than it would in Bermuda or St. Augustine.

Who is zoysia right for in Harahan?
- 01
Yards with part shade
Yards with part shade: LSU AgCenter ranks zoysia second for shade among warm-season grasses, behind St. Augustine, and the exact tolerance varies from one cultivar to the next.
- 02
Families with moderate traffic
Families with moderate traffic: LSU calls zoysia very wear-resistant. The catch is recovery: once worn down, it fills back in slowly.
- 03
Owners who’d rather mow less
Owners who’d rather mow less: Zoysia has grown in popularity for its low mowing needs and deep color.
- 04
A poor match for compacted ground
A poor match for compacted ground: LSU says zoysia doesn’t like compact soil, and its shallow roots struggle in it. Keep that in mind on Harahan’s dense Schriever clay.

Why does zoysia go in as sod?
Zoysia spreads slowly by stolons and rhizomes, which is why most zoysia lawns start from sod. LSU notes that plugged zoysia can take 2 to 3 years to fill in, though newer cultivars can reach full cover in one year. Sod skips that wait: you get full cover the moment it’s laid, and the job left is rooting.
That rooting goes faster in warm soil, so spring and summer are the easy months to lay it. Since zoysia won’t race to cover a thin seam the way Bermuda does, tight seams on install day count for more with this grass. Our Harahan sod installation guide covers the timing and prep.

How does zoysia handle Harahan’s clay and loam?
- 01
Schriever clay in the back of town
The centers of Royland, Harahan Oaks and Glenwood Park map as Schriever clay, a dense backswamp soil that shrinks and swells and stays saturated near the surface from December through April. For a grass that dislikes compaction, that ground needs loosening before the sod goes down, and periodic core aeration afterward helps. A wet low spot that stays thin through winter will be slow to fill once spring arrives, so grading it out first is worth the effort.
- 02
Cancienne loam by the river
West Imperial and Roseland Park sit on Cancienne soils that drain better and loosen more easily. Zoysia’s ideal pH is 6 to 7. Cancienne’s typical surface reading is about 5.7 and Schriever’s about 7.3, so both sit just outside that band, and a soil test shows whether to adjust. Our post on preparing a lawn for zoysia walks through the groundwork.

What upkeep does a zoysia lawn need here?
Want the most shade tolerance instead? Look at St. Augustine sod in Harahan. Need faster recovery in full sun? Bermuda for Harahan yards heals quicker.
| Task | What LSU AgCenter says |
|---|---|
| Mowing | 1 to 2 inches, with coarse-bladed types cut higher and narrow-leaf types lower; stiff leaves need a sharp blade, and a reel mower is advised |
| Feeding | A yearly cap of 2 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet, split into rounds of 1 pound or less between midspring and midsummer |
| Thatch | Builds up in zoysia; without periodic dethatching or topdressing you can lose the lawn to it, and an older LSU guide says untended south Louisiana zoysia often needed replacing after 5 to 7 years |
| Pests and disease | Billbugs, nematodes, rust, brown patch and large patch |
| Cold | High cold tolerance compared with other turfgrasses, so a zone 9b winter like Harahan’s is rarely its problem |
