LSU AgCenter says centipede grows best at pH 5 to 6, and its leaves can yellow once the soil rises above 7. Harahan’s two main soils sit on opposite sides of that line.

Feed it less than you think
Centipede decline is a lethal syndrome that shows up as large dead or yellow patches in spring. LSU links it to overfeeding, heavy thatch and drought. Keep nitrogen to about 1 to 2 pounds for each 1,000 square feet a year, never more than 2, and go easy on phosphorus.

Fall feeding and excess thatch both leave centipede more open to winter injury. It doesn’t tolerate cold well, even in a zone 9b city like this one.
