It’s for homeowners with oaks, magnolias or pines overhead who still want a full, soft lawn.

01 · Mandeville

Will St. Augustine grow under Mandeville’s oaks and pines?

Usually, yes. LSU AgCenter ranks St. Augustine as the most shade-tolerant warm-season turfgrass, ahead of zoysia and centipede. That matters here, since Mandeville’s low-density zoning keeps at least half of the setback trees over 3 inches in diameter standing and sets a minimum tree count for each lot.

It still has limits. Most turfgrasses need 4 to 6 hours of full sun, and LSU is blunt that even St. Augustine won’t grow well in dense shade. A spreading live oak can throw exactly that kind of shade. Under heavy canopy, raise your mower to 3 to 3.5 in so the blades catch more light, and feed no more than 0.5 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft at a time. Don’t plan on cutting trees back to make room: a removal in Mandeville needs the city’s application first, and it asks specifically about live oaks.

Getting Mandeville’s acid soil ready for St. Augustine

LSU puts St. Augustine’s ideal soil pH at about 6.5. Mandeville’s Guyton and Abita topsoil usually tests between 4.8 and 5.5, so lime is normally part of the plan. How much depends on a soil test, and the St. Tammany Parish LSU AgCenter office can supply the sample box.

Don’t overshoot, though. Take-all root rot, a disease that hits St. Augustine, is favored by long rainy spells and soil pH above 6.5. Liming to the test number, and no further, keeps you out of that range. Prep, grading and the rest of the install are covered on our sod installation page for Mandeville.

What goes wrong with St. Augustine in Mandeville?

  • Southern chinch bugs: LSU calls them mainly a St. Augustine problem. They like the sunny, hot, dry parts of the lawn, run 3 to 4 generations a year in Louisiana, and do most damage in mid to late summer. Check with a soap flush: 1 tablespoon of lemon-scented soap in a gallon of water. LSU treats once a count reaches 25 to 30 bugs in each square foot of turf.
  • Large patch: A spring and fall disease that thrives when nights sit between 60 and 75 F. On St. Augustine the advancing edge of the patch turns yellowish. Water early in the morning and keep nitrogen at recommended rates.
  • Take-all root rot: Easy to mistake for chinch bug damage, so check for bugs before you treat for either one.
  • Winter decline on wet ground: LSU names St. Augustine as one of the two grasses hit hardest in poorly drained, low-lying soil. Guyton silt loam, which spot checks found in north Mandeville and on the east side, carries a wet-season water table near 9 in, so a crowned grade before the sod goes down pays off.
