TurnKey Grass handles the whole job here with our own crews: site prep, fresh sod delivered, laid and rolled. It’s for new builds on bare ground, tired lawns under the oaks, and yards that have to look right before a sale.

How do we prep Mandeville silt loam for sod?

Most built-up yards in the city sit on Guyton or Abita silt loam, with pockets of fine sandy loam. Silt loam packs down hard when it’s worked wet, so prep here is about timing as much as tools.

    Test before you lime

Mandeville topsoil runs around pH 4.8 to 5.5. St. Augustine, Bermuda and zoysia all prefer it higher, so LSU AgCenter advises sending a soil sample several weeks before planting and working in lime or fertilizer by what the test says.

  2. 02

    Clear and loosen

Old turf and weeds come out first. LSU’s sod guide calls for tilling 4 to 6 in deep and pulling debris. Your estimate spells out exactly what your yard gets.

  3. 03

Shape the grade so water leaves

On flat Guyton ground the water table can rise to about 9 in in the wet season. A slight crown, or about a 1 percent fall away from the house, keeps rain from pooling on new sod. We fill low spots as part of prep where the estimate calls for it.

  4. 04

Keep heavy equipment off wet soil

Driving pallets across saturated silt loam leaves ruts and a compacted layer that roots struggle through. After a big rain we’d rather wait a day for the yard to drain.

When should you lay sod in Mandeville?

LSU AgCenter expects the best establishment between April and September, while the grass is actively growing. Mandeville adds two local wrinkles. Near the lakefront, Abita soil holds water close to the surface, within about 1 to 3 ft, from December into April, so early spring ground can still be soggy. And the city sits in USDA zone 9a, so the year’s coldest night averages 20 to 25 F.

Sod can go down in the cooler months, but LSU warns dormant sod is more prone to drying out and winter injury from October to March. If you’re set on a fall job, LSU’s rule is to lay it at least 40 days before the first hard frost. Want the Bermuda-specific steps? See how Bermuda sod goes down.

Who do you call before digging, filling or regrading?

  • Louisiana 811: Call 811 or use LA One Call’s online homeowner request before any tilling. The service is free, and we won’t dig until lines are marked.
  • City of Mandeville Planning and Building: The city says all development in the floodplain needs a permit, and it lists grading a yard among flood protection measures. Ask at 985-624-3104 before bringing in fill.
  • Public Works: The city inspects its ditches and channels at least twice a year, and its flood brochure warns that even grass clippings in a ditch can block flow. Keep sod scraps out of the roadside ditch. Drainage questions go to 985-624-3169.
  • Tree removal: If a tree has to come out for the lawn, the city’s tree removal application goes to permits@cityofmandeville.com first.

Watering new sod through Mandeville weather

Right after laying, soak until both the sod and the soil under it are moist, but stop before water runs off. During the growing season, LSU’s sod guide calls for watering 1 to 2 times a day for the first 10 to 14 days, then less often and longer so the roots chase moisture down.

Rain does a lot of that work here. NOAA’s Abita Springs station, about 8 miles north of central Mandeville, averages 63.27 in of rain a year and 7.50 in in July alone. After a soaking storm, check the soil before the next cycle; on poorly drained silt loam, extra water just sits. A nearby NOAA station puts the July average high at about 90 F, so in a dry week, don’t skip the second daily cycle.

Sod installation questions from Mandeville homeowners

Can sod go down over the fill on a new Mandeville build?

Yes, once it’s graded, loosened and tested. LSU also warns against laying sod grown on one soil type over a very different one, since it changes how water soaks in, so tell us what your builder brought in.

How do I know when the new sod has rooted?

Gently lift a corner. LSU says roots may show in 30 to 60 days. Once it holds, the first light feeding and first mow can follow.

Which grass should I put down?

That depends on your shade and drainage. Shaded lots usually end up with St. Augustine for Mandeville yards, while low-input owners on acid ground look at centipede in Mandeville. Our guide to grass for each part of Mandeville walks through it, and the main sod installation page compares all four.
