Is your Mandeville yard a Bermuda yard?
Bermuda does well in the right spot and struggles in the wrong one. Run your yard through these four checks:
If a big oak shades part of the lot, the shaded side belongs to St. Augustine on Mandeville’s shaded lots, and the sunny side can stay Bermuda.

- Full sun most of the day: LSU AgCenter rates Bermuda’s shade tolerance as very poor. Since the city requires half of the setback trees over 3 inches to stay, a shaded front yard may not qualify.
- Ground that drains: The moderately well drained Prentiss fine sandy loam around central Mandeville near Hwy 190, and Abita silt loam, which drains somewhat better than Guyton, are the better bets. Low Guyton ground with a water table near 9 in during the wet season is not.
- Real wear: LSU credits Bermuda with exceptional traffic and wear tolerance, which is why it covers athletic fields and golf courses across Louisiana.
- Time to keep it up: LSU calls it a high-maintenance choice. You’ll mow at 1 to 2 in, often, and it creeps into beds fast by runners above and below ground.

How does Bermuda handle Mandeville winters?
It goes brown. LSU’s calendar shows warm-season turf dormant from about November through February, and Bermuda is no exception. In Mandeville’s zone 9a, the coldest night of the year averages 20 to 25 F, so expect a tan lawn for a few months. That’s normal. Our post on Bermuda dormancy in Louisiana winters explains what’s happening and when it greens up.
Cold is still Bermuda’s main weakness, according to LSU, though it ranks above St. Augustine and centipede on cold tolerance. A wet winter is the other risk here. LSU says winter turf decline is worst on poorly drained, low-lying ground, so a Bermuda lawn belongs where water runs off.

Why Mandeville soil needs lime before Bermuda
Bermuda grows best at pH 6 to 7. The Guyton and Abita topsoil under most built-up yards tests around 4.8 to 5.5, strongly acidic, so a soil test and lime come before the sod. Once it’s established, LSU allows up to 3 lb of nitrogen annually for each 1,000 sq ft, applied from midspring to midsummer and no more than 1 lb at a time.
Dry spells are where Bermuda earns its keep. It handles drier soil than many other turfgrasses, which helps on the better drained sandy loam. For a schedule once it’s rooted, see how often to water Bermuda.

Bermuda questions from Mandeville homeowners
What pest should I watch for?
Fall armyworms. LSU says Bermuda is a common target, with injury possible from June to November, and a heavy infestation can strip a lawn in one night. Check any area that browns suddenly between June and November.
How much does Bermuda sod cost?
It depends on yard size, prep and access. Our Bermuda sod cost guide for Louisiana covers the market range, and your Mandeville estimate is free.
Can Bermuda share a yard with zoysia?
Keep them apart. Bermuda spreads quickly, and LSU treats common Bermuda that creeps into zoysia as a weed. If you want a sun grass that grows slowly and stays put, look at zoysia sod in Mandeville.
