Centipede Sod in Mandeville on Acid Soil
Centipede sod in Mandeville starts with an advantage: the city’s native topsoil already sits in the acid range centipede prefers.

Why does centipede like Mandeville’s acid topsoil?
LSU AgCenter puts centipede’s ideal soil pH at 5 to 6, and above 7 its leaves can turn yellow. The NRCS soil survey shows Mandeville’s main lawn soils, Guyton and Abita silt loam, plus the Stough and Prentiss fine sandy loams, with surface pH around 4.8 to 5.5. That’s the closest match of the four grasses we install.
It doesn’t mean you skip the soil test. At the very bottom of that range, a test may still call for a little lime. The LSU AgCenter’s St. Tammany Parish office can supply a sample box for the LSU lab.
Centipede also grows on low nitrogen, which is where its nickname, “lazy man’s grass,” comes from. LSU says excess phosphorus can hurt its quality too, so a soil test beats a bag of general-purpose fertilizer.

Where does centipede fail in Mandeville?
Under heavier shade, centipede thins out. LSU ranks it third for shade, behind St. Augustine and zoysia, so a yard under the oaks usually does better with St. Augustine for shaded Mandeville yards.

- Low, wet ground: LSU names poorly drained, low-lying, silty clay soils as where centipede winter decline is common. Guyton and Abita have silty clay loam a couple of feet down and a seasonal high water table, so centipede belongs only on well-graded ground here.
- Heavy traffic: Centipede doesn’t tolerate traffic or compaction. Purple to red leaves are its stress signal. A sunny play yard is better off with Bermuda in Mandeville.
- Fill that tests alkaline: If a new build’s fill comes back above pH 7, centipede will yellow. Test the fill, not just the native soil.
- Cold and drought: LSU says centipede does not tolerate cold weather, and every Mandeville ZIP falls in zone 9a, where USDA’s average for the year’s coldest night is 20 to 25 F. It’s also one of the most drought-sensitive turfgrasses, so it needs water in a dry spell.

How do you keep centipede from declining?
Centipede decline is what LSU calls a complex, lethal syndrome: big dead or yellow patches that show up in spring. It’s tied to overfeeding, heavy thatch and drought. Four habits keep it away.

- 01
1. Feed it very little
About 1 to 2 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft a year, never more than 2. Overfeeding is one of the causes LSU ties to decline.
- 02
2. Mow it low
Keep it around 1 to 2 in. An LSU AgCenter turf article calls tall mowing very dangerous for centipede.
- 03
3. Skip fall nitrogen
Tall cuts, thick thatch and fall feeding all set centipede up for freeze damage, and that matters with zone 9a winters.
- 04
4. Water in dry weeks
Drought stress is part of the decline picture. Water deeply in a dry stretch, early in the morning.

Centipede questions from Mandeville homeowners
Can I use any weed killer on centipede?
No. LSU notes centipede is sensitive to many commonly used herbicides, so read the label for centipede before you spray.
How fast will centipede sod fill gaps?
Slowly. It spreads by runners at a gentle pace, which is why sod is the usual way to start it.
When is the best time to lay it?
Late spring through summer gives it the longest run before winter. Our Mandeville sod installation page covers timing around the local water table.
