How does Bermuda handle Hammond’s rain and heat?
Summer is Bermuda’s season. It stands up to heat and drought better than most lawn grasses, and a July normal high of 91.5 F at the Hammond 5 E station won’t stop it. Once the lawn is established, our guide on how often to water Bermuda grass covers the dry stretches.
Rain is the harder test. The Hammond station records a normal 62.21 inches a year, and the city’s Guyton silt loam is poorly drained. Take-all root rot, which LSU calls bermudagrass decline when it strikes this grass, is favored by long rainy periods. Shaping the lawn so water runs toward the street before we lay it is the best protection we can give you.
Soil chemistry needs a fix too. Bermuda does best at pH 6 to 7, and Hammond’s main soils sit around 4.8 to 5.5 at the surface, so plan on lime guided by a soil test.

What does a Hammond winter do to Bermuda?
LSU AgCenter names lack of cold tolerance as Bermuda’s main weakness. Hammond is zone 9a, where the average coldest night of the year falls between 20 and 25 F, and NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 normals put January lows near 38 F just east of town. If you lay Bermuda in late fall, LSU’s dormant-sod advice applies: lay it 40 or more days ahead of the first hard freeze, or hold off until the turf has mostly browned, and skip fertilizer until spring.

How short do I mow it?
LSU’s range is 1 to 2 inches in the growing season. A reel mower gives the cleanest cut, especially if you go below an inch.
Will it creep into my flower beds?
Probably, without an edge. It spreads by stolons and rhizomes, and when common Bermuda invades a St. Augustine, centipede or zoysia lawn, LSU treats it as a weed.
What about armyworms?
Fall armyworms target Bermuda from June to November and can strip a lawn overnight. Check sunny areas often in late summer.
