Centipede Sod in Hammond's Naturally Acidic Ground

Centipede sod is the one grass that likes Hammond’s acidic ground close to how it comes: LSU AgCenter puts its ideal pH between 5 and 6, and the city’s main silt loams test around 4.8 to 5.5 at the surface.

It asks for little fertilizer or mowing, but it punishes wet feet, heavy traffic and overfeeding.

01 · Hammond

Why does centipede fit Hammond’s soil?

LSU calls centipede popular for its low upkeep and its ability to grow in acid soils with little nitrogen, the reason it earned the nickname “lazy man’s grass.” Hammond’s Guyton and Abita silt loams are naturally acidic, so many yards need little or no lime for it. A soil test still comes first, because centipede leaves can turn yellow once pH climbs above 7.

Watch for pockets of Brimstone soil, which turned up in a few west Hammond samples. It reads about 6.8 at the surface, and LSU notes centipede does fine near 6.7 but turns lighter in color. Brimstone’s subsoil is also high in sodium, and LSU rates every centipede type salt sensitive, so we’d test before committing on that ground.

Where does centipede fail in Hammond?

  • 01

    Soggy Guyton ground

Soggy Guyton ground: Centipede wants good drainage, and LSU lists it among the grasses winter decline hits hardest in poorly drained, low-lying soil. Low spots near the creeks need grading before it goes in.

  • 02

    Paths and play areas

Paths and play areas: It doesn’t tolerate traffic or compaction. Stressed leaves turn purple to red where people walk, and zoysia for busier Hammond yards wears better.

  • 03

    Heavy oak shade

Heavy oak shade: It handles light to moderate shade but declines in heavy shade, where St. Augustine in Hammond does better.

  • 04

    Alkaline fill

Alkaline fill: If your lot was built up with fill, test that fill before you plant, since pH above 7 yellows the leaves.

How do you keep centipede decline away?

LSU describes centipede decline as a complex, lethal syndrome that shows up as large dead or yellow patches in spring. Overfeeding, heavy thatch and drought are the usual triggers, and Hammond homeowners can head off all of them.

  1. 01

    Feed lightly

Plan on about 1 to 2 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet a year, never more than 2. Go easy on phosphorus too, since excess can lower centipede quality.

  2. 02

    Keep it short

Mow at 1 to 2 inches. Tall cuts, thick thatch and fall nitrogen all leave centipede more open to freeze damage, and Hammond’s zone 9a winters bring a normal January low of 38.3 F at the Hammond 5 E station.

  3. 03

    Water through dry spells

Centipede is one of the most drought-sensitive turfgrasses, and drought stress feeds decline. Hammond gets plenty of rain on average, but any dry stretch still calls for the hose.

  4. 04

    Read herbicide labels

It’s sensitive to many common weed killers, so check the label before you spray.

Centipede questions from Hammond homeowners

How do I spot large patch on centipede?

Look for a reddish cast at the leading edge of a spreading patch, usually in spring or fall. Water in the early morning to slow it.

How fast will centipede fill in?

Slowly. It spreads by stolons, which is why sodding is the usual way to start a centipede lawn.

Can I lay centipede late in the year?

You can, but LSU says sod laid while dormant, October to March, is more open to drying out and winter injury, and centipede doesn’t tolerate cold well. Spring through summer is the better window in Hammond.
