Most of the city sits on Guyton and Abita silt loam, a fine-textured soil. LSU notes that compaction happens more often on fine-textured soils, and zoysia’s shallow roots struggle once the ground packs down. Loosening the top 4 to 6 inches before we lay is the part of the prep that matters most for this grass.
