LSU AgCenter rates its traffic tolerance exceptional and its shade tolerance very poor. So the question for your yard is simple: how many hours of direct sun does the lawn get?

Is your St. Rose lot sunny enough for Bermuda?
LSU says Bermuda prefers full sun and doesn’t grow well in partial to heavy shade. Its major limitations, per LSU, are cold and shade. In St. Rose, that sorts yards fast:

- 01
Open subdivision lots
Open subdivision lots: the 2000s were St. Rose’s biggest building decade, and a younger lot without mature trees is often a fair Bermuda candidate.
- 02
Smaller manufactured-home lots
Smaller manufactured-home lots: roughly 20 percent of St. Rose housing units are mobile homes. If the yard is open, Bermuda’s quick spread closes seams fast.
- 03
Yards under a big tree
Yards under a big tree: pass. Bermuda thins out in shade, and St. Augustine for St. Rose shade is the better fit there.
- 04
Mixed lots
Mixed lots: sun in front, shade in back. Laying one grass in front and another in back is an option we can talk through on the visit.

How does Bermuda handle St. Rose wear, rain and dry spells?
- 01
Foot traffic
It’s the grass Louisiana uses on athletic fields and golf courses. It spreads by both runners and underground rhizomes, so worn spots fill back in quicker than with the slower grasses.
- 02
Dry weeks
Bermuda tolerates drier soil than many turfgrasses. That helps in October, the driest month at the nearest NOAA station with 3.70 inches on average, when other lawns start asking for the hose.
- 03
Wet ground
The levee silt loam under St. Rose homes is somewhat poorly drained, and on the back clays water moves very slowly. Bermuda still needs the surface to shed water, and LSU lists a take-all disease, called bermudagrass decline, that extended rainfall favors.

What does Bermuda look like in a St. Rose winter?
Brown. LSU’s calendar shows warm-season turf dormant roughly November through February, and Bermuda’s lack of cold tolerance is one of its weak points. At the nearest NOAA station, January averages a low of 46.1 F, and St. Rose sits in USDA zone 9b, where the year’s coldest night averages between 25 and 30 F. Your lawn will go tan for the winter and green up again in spring.
That’s normal dormancy. If your sod goes down in the cool months, LSU says to hold off on fertilizer while it’s dormant. Our post on whether Bermuda goes dormant in Louisiana winters explains what to expect month by month.
