Our own crews prep the ground, schedule fresh-cut delivery around the laying, so the grass goes from pallet to soil before it dries out. Here’s how that job plays out on a St. Rose lot.

How we prep Cancienne silt loam before the sod goes down
The checked home addresses in St. Rose all map to Cancienne silt loam. It’s a very deep soil, but NRCS describes it as somewhat poorly drained and moderately slowly permeable, with a perched saturated zone 1.5 to 4 feet below the surface from December through April. Prep is about getting water moving off and through the top few inches.

- 01
Clear and loosen
Old grass and weeds come out first. LSU AgCenter’s sod guide calls for tilling 4 to 6 inches deep and pulling the debris, which gives new roots loose soil to grow into.
- 02
Shape the grade away from the house
LSU’s older lawn publication notes that a 1 percent slope or a slight crown can head off drainage trouble later. On a lot that already ponds after a storm, filling low spots and setting the fall is the part of the job that pays off longest.
- 03
Test, then amend
Survey pH on this soil ranges from 5.1 to 7.8, so guessing is a bad bet. A sample sent through the LSU AgCenter Soil Testing and Plant Analysis Lab a few weeks ahead tells you whether lime or fertilizer belongs in the ground before the sod covers it.

When should you schedule a St. Rose sod install?
LSU AgCenter expects the best sod establishment from April through September. Warm-season grass grows slowly once soil drops below 70 F and stops below 60 F, and at the nearest NOAA station, at the airport about 3 miles east of St. Rose, January averages a low of 46.1 F.
LSU says sod can go down in any month in Louisiana, and all of St. Rose sits in USDA zone 9b. Dormant sod dries out and takes winter injury more easily, though. If a fall job can’t wait, LSU’s advice is to finish at least 40 days before the first hard frost or hold off until the grass is mostly brown, and skip fertilizer until spring. Winter is also when that perched water table sits highest, which is one more reason we lean toward a spring start for wet lots.

Utilities, ditches and fill: who to call before we dig
- Buried lines: call 811 before any digging so utilities get marked. The free service runs through Louisiana 811, and LSU’s lawn guide lists it as a step before tilling.
- Roadside ditches and driveway culverts: call the parish Department of Public Works, based in Destrehan, at (985) 783-5102. Its yard crews handle ditch cleaning and culverts, and its Engineering division manages drainage permits.
- Fill and floodplain questions: parish Planning and Zoning in Hahnville, (985) 783-5060, enforces federal flood rules and takes requests for elevation certificates. We didn’t find a specific parish fill ordinance, so ask them before bringing in a big load.
- Known wet streets: the parish’s 2023 drainage study flags stretches of Crespo, Turtle Creek Lane and Mockingbird Lane, among others. On those blocks we check grade with extra care.

Watering new sod through St. Rose weather
LSU AgCenter’s establishment guide says to soak new sod until the soil underneath is moist, then water 1 to 2 times a day for the first 10 to 14 days during the growing season. After two weeks, water less often but longer so roots chase moisture down.
The local weather changes how that plays out. The nearest NOAA station logs about 63 inches of rain a year, with June the wettest month at 7.62 inches and October the driest at 3.70. A June install often gets help from the rain, so skip a cycle when the ground is already wet. An October job leans on the hose. Water early in the morning either way, which is LSU’s advice for keeping large patch down. Roots usually show in 30 to 60 days, and you can check by lifting a corner.

Sod installation questions from St. Rose homeowners
Which grass should go on my St. Rose lot?
Shade usually decides it. Yards under big trees lean toward St. Augustine for shaded St. Rose yards, while open lots in full sun suit Bermuda on sunny St. Rose lots. If you’re set on centipede, read our centipede notes for St. Rose soil first.
Can you lay sod on a manufactured-home lot?
Yes. About one home in five in St. Rose is a mobile home, and those smaller lots mostly mean careful cutting around steps, skirting and parking pads.
Is the river water from my tap fine for new sod?
Your sprinkler runs on treated Mississippi River water, drawn by the parish water department at its East Bank intake. We found no lawn-watering restriction on the Waterworks pages.
Is the process different for Bermuda?
The steps match, with timing tweaks. Our walkthrough on how to install Bermuda grass sod covers them.
