The trade-off: very poor shade tolerance, so a lawn under water oaks or pines is the wrong home for it.

01 · Slidell

Is your Slidell yard sunny enough for Bermuda?

Bermuda wants full sun all day. LSU says plainly that it doesn’t grow well in partial or heavy shade. Before anything else, stand in the yard on a summer afternoon and count the hours of direct light.

Plenty of Slidell lots have more trees than a Bermuda lawn can live with. The city’s plan aims to preserve the canopy, and any tree removal goes through a city permit, so planning to clear for Bermuda is a bigger job than it sounds. For a yard that’s half sun and half shade, St. Augustine under Slidell’s trees or zoysia for partly shaded Slidell lots will cover more of it.

Where Bermuda shines is the open lot: a new build with young trees, a backyard where the kids play ball, a side yard the dog runs every morning.

How does Bermuda cope with Slidell’s wet and dry spells?

Slidell gets about 66 inches of rain a year at the in-city NOAA station, yet summer still brings dry weeks. Bermuda tolerates drier soil than many other turfgrasses, which helps in the dry weeks between storms.

Too much water is the harder problem. A few things to watch on Slidell ground:

If your Bermuda is already struggling, our guide on why Bermuda turns brown and how to fix it covers the usual causes.

  • 01

    Bermudagrass decline

Bermudagrass decline: LSU’s name for take-all root rot on Bermuda. It’s favored by long rainy stretches and soil pH above 6.5.

  • 02

    Large patch

Large patch: LSU lists Bermuda as susceptible. Water in the early morning, never at dusk.

  • 03

    Fall armyworms

Fall armyworms: LSU says Bermuda is a common target from June to November, and a heavy infestation can strip a lawn in one night.

  • 04

    Low spots

Low spots: Myatt soil is poorly drained and the water table rises within inches of the surface in the wet season, so a crowned grade pays off.

03 · Slidell

What does Bermuda look like in a Slidell winter?

Brown. Every ZIP in Slidell is USDA zone 9a, and January lows average near 42 F at the in-town NOAA station. LSU calls a lack of cold tolerance Bermuda’s major limitation, though it ranks above St. Augustine and centipede on LSU’s cold chart.

Expect a tan lawn roughly November to February while it rests, then green-up as the soil warms. That’s normal dormancy, not a dead lawn. Our post on Bermuda dormancy in Louisiana winters explains what to do, and what to leave alone, until spring.

Keeping Bermuda healthy on acidic Slidell soil

  1. 01

    Raise the pH first

Bermuda does best at pH 6 to 7. Slidell’s native topsoil tests around 5.0 to 5.3, so lime per a soil test from the parish extension office is part of most jobs. NRCS notes that drained Stough soils are used for bermudagrass among other crops.

  2. 02

    Mow it short and often

LSU’s range is 1 to 2 inches in the growing season. A reel mower gives the cleanest cut, especially below an inch.

  3. 03

    Feed it in season

Up to 3 lb of N per 1,000 sq ft yearly, mid spring to midsummer, never more than 1 pound at a time. See our Bermuda fertilizer guide for product types.

  4. 04

    Hold the edges

Common Bermuda spreads by seed, and LSU treats it as a weed when it invades St. Augustine, centipede or zoysia. Firm bed edges keep it where you want it.
