LSU AgCenter rates its shade tolerance very poor, so before you pick it, count how many hours of direct sun your lawn really gets.

Is your Metairie yard a Bermuda yard?
Bermuda earns its spot on athletic fields and golf courses because LSU rates its traffic and wear tolerance as exceptional. The trade is sun. It does poorly in partial shade and worse in heavy shade, and near Metairie Road, where parish rules protect the existing tree canopy, check the shade before anything else. Run through this before you commit:
If the yard falls short on sun, look at St. Augustine for shaded Metairie lots or zoysia as a partial-shade option instead.

Sun
Sun: Most turf needs 4 to 6 hours of direct light. LSU says Bermuda prefers full sun.
- 02
Use
Use: A yard that takes pets, play and parties is where Bermuda pays off.
- 03
Mowing
Mowing: LSU keeps it at 1 to 2 inches, and an older LSU guide recommends a reel mower, especially for cuts under an inch.
- 04
Effort
Effort: LSU calls it a high-maintenance choice, with up to 3 lb of nitrogen yearly for every 1,000 square feet, spread from midspring to midsummer.

How does Bermuda handle Metairie’s wet ground and dry spells?
Metairie averages about 63 inches of rain a year at the nearest NOAA station, and much of it lands on ground that drains slowly. Bermuda handles drier soil than many grasses, which helps in October, the driest month at around 3.7 inches. Wet ground is the harder test.

- 01
On the lake-side muck
The water table under drained marsh soil is held 1 to 4 feet down by pumps. The ground also settles over time, and low spots that hold water after a storm need filling at prep, or the grass thins in them.
- 02
On Schriever clay
At the Bonnabel Place point the soil map shows Schriever clay, slow to drain with a typical surface reading of about pH 7.3. Bermuda prefers 6 to 7, and take-all root rot, which LSU calls bermudagrass decline on this grass, is favored by long rainy spells and pH above 6.5. A soil test tells you how far off you are.
For watering once the lawn is established, our guide to how often to water Bermuda lays out a schedule.

What does Bermuda look like in a Metairie winter?
Brown. LSU’s calendar shows warm-season grass dormant roughly November through February, and Bermuda goes tan when it sleeps. That’s normal, not a dead lawn. Metairie sits in zone 9b, an average annual extreme minimum of 25 to 30 F, and January nights average about 46 F. LSU lists poor cold tolerance among Bermuda’s main limits, though it still ranks above St. Augustine and centipede on cold.
Planting late? Get dormant Bermuda sod down 40 or more days ahead of the first hard frost, or hold off until the turf has browned, and don’t feed it until spring. More on what to expect in our post on Bermuda dormancy in Louisiana winters.

Bermuda questions from Metairie homeowners
Will Bermuda creep into my neighbor’s St. Augustine?
It spreads fast by stolons and rhizomes. Hybrid Bermudas are sterile and won’t spread from seed, but common Bermuda that invades a St. Augustine, zoysia or centipede lawn gets treated as a weed.
What chews up Bermuda from summer into fall?
Fall armyworms. LSU says Bermuda is a common target from June to November, and a heavy outbreak can wreck a lawn overnight. Check the grass often in that stretch.
