Fresh sod being laid in a residential yard

Sod Installation in Metairie, Prepped for Pumped Ground

Sod installation in Metairie starts below the grass. Most yards here sit on drained marsh muck or slow backswamp clay, kept dry by levees and pumps, so the prep matters as much as the sod.

01 · Metairie

How do we prep Metairie ground before the sod goes down?

LSU AgCenter’s sequence is the same everywhere: kill off what’s growing, loosen the top 4 to 6 inches, pull out debris, then shape the surface so water runs off and roll it lightly so it holds that shape. What changes in Metairie is what you find when the shovel goes in.

    Lake-side muck: Bucktown to Lafreniere

Organic marsh soil shrinks once it’s drained, because microbes slowly break down the plant matter it’s made of. NASA’s radar study of 2009 to 2012 picked up notable sinking in Metairie. For a lawn, that means old low spots and sunken edges along drives. We fill and re-shape them so the new sod doesn’t sit in a puddle, and an older LSU guide suggests a 1% slope or a slight crown to head off drainage trouble later.

  2. 02

Backswamp clay: Bonnabel Place and Westgate

Schriever clay lets water through very slowly, and Westwego clay is poorly drained too.Federal soil data lists Schriever’s shallowest yearly water table at the surface itself, so after a long rain these yards stay wet. Loosening the surface and grading it away from the house does more here than anything you add on top.

  3. 03

Natural levee loam along Metairie Road

Cancienne silt loam drains better than anything else in town, yet it can carry a perched wet layer 1.5 to 4 feet down from December through April. Winter prep on these lots can hit soggy ground, which is one more reason to plan for warm months.

02 · Metairie

Do you need parish approval before regrading in Old Metairie?

Sometimes. Inside the Metairie Ridge Tree Preservation District, “clearing or filling a lot” counts as a major construction activity. The Jefferson Parish code says those applications go to the building permits department or the planning department before any work starts, and the same filing rule covers the Old Metairie conservation district. The district runs from Bonnabel Boulevard and I-10 down to Metairie Road and across to the 17th Street Canal.

Old Metairie’s rules do allow fill to clear or level ground and to provide drainage. If your project needs more than a light top-up near big trees, we’ll point it out on the visit so you can file first.

When is the right month to lay sod in Metairie?

For a dormant-season job, LSU says to lay sod at least 40 days before the first hard frost or wait until the grass is mostly brown, and skip fertilizer until spring.

Months What the grass is doing What it means in Metairie
April to September Active growth, the window where LSU expects sod to establish best Our first choice. June is the wettest month at about 7.6 inches, which helps watering but tests drainage on muck and clay.
March and October Growth starting or slowing Workable. October is the driest month at about 3.7 inches, so plan on more watering.
November to February Dormant; warm-season grass stops growing once soil is under 60 F Possible, with risk of drying out and winter injury. January lows average about 46 F.

What happens on install day?

  • 01

    Utility locate

Utility locate: Call 811 before anyone digs. Louisiana One Call takes homeowner requests online, and we won’t till until lines are marked.

  • 02

Sod on the truck, then straight down

Sod on the truck, then straight down: LSU warns that delays between delivery and laying cause weak rooting or dead sod, so delivery and laying get booked as one visit.

  • 03

    Brick pattern and a roller

Brick pattern and a roller: Seams staggered, edges butted tight with no overlap, then the whole lawn rolled to press out air pockets.

  • 04

    A first deep soak

A first deep soak: We water until the sod and the soil under it are both wet, without runoff, before we leave.

05 · Metairie

How should you water new sod through a Metairie summer?

With July highs near 91 F and nights that stay around 76 F, new sod dries fast at the top even when the ground below is damp. During the growing season, LSU’s schedule is 1 or 2 waterings a day for the first 10 to 14 days, then fewer, longer soaks to push roots deeper. Water early in the morning, which LSU advises to hold off large patch.

On muck where the water table sits only 1 to 4 feet down, watch for soggy spots and ease off there. Around day 30, gently lift a corner. Roots usually show between 30 and 60 days, and that’s when the first light feeding and first mow can happen. Bermuda owners can read our step-by-step guide to installing Bermuda sod, and our main sod installation service page covers the general process.
