It spreads slowly, so sod is how you get it, and it’s happiest where Metairie’s soil pH sits between 6 and 7.

Who should pick zoysia in Metairie?
If your yard is mostly shade, St. Augustine under Metairie’s oaks is the safer bet.
- 01
Yards with partial shade
Yards with partial shade: LSU ranks zoysia second to St. Augustine for shade, with a lot of variation by cultivar. Dappled light near Metairie Road’s trees can work; deep oak shade usually can’t.
- 02
Families who use the lawn
Families who use the lawn: It has high wear tolerance, though LSU notes it recovers slowly once it’s damaged.
- 03
Owners with a sharp mower
Owners with a sharp mower: The stiff leaves are hard to cut cleanly, and LSU advises a reel mower.
- 04
People who’d like to feed less
People who’d like to feed less: LSU caps zoysia at 2 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet a year, and mature lawns can run lower, closer to centipede’s needs.

Which Metairie soils line up with zoysia?
LSU gives zoysia an ideal pH of 6 to 7. Metairie’s mapped soils straddle that range:
pH is half the story. LSU says zoysia doesn’t like compacted soil because its roots run shallow, and Metairie’s backswamp clays drain very slowly. Loosening the top 4 to 6 inches at prep matters more for zoysia than for St. Augustine. Our page on preparing a lawn for zoysia walks through it.

| Soil | Mapped at the point we checked | Surface pH | Zoysia fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Westwego clay | Westgate | About 6.2 | In range |
| Schriever clay | Bonnabel Place | About 7.3 | Just above range |
| Cancienne loams | Metairie Terrace, Beverly Knoll, Oak Ridge Park | About 5.7 | Just below range |
| Allemands muck | Around Lakeshore Playground | About 5.4 | Well below; plan on a soil test and lime |

Why does zoysia take longer to settle in?
Zoysia creeps by stolons and rhizomes at a slow pace. Plugged lawns can take 2 to 3 years to fill in, which is why most zoysia lawns start as sod. Even sod seams close slowly, and a scuffed patch by the back gate won’t heal over as quickly as Bermuda on a sunny Metairie yard would.
The other long-term chore is thatch. LSU says it builds up especially in zoysia, and an older LSU guide found south Louisiana zoysia lawns often needed replacing after 5 to 7 years when nobody dethatched them. Plan on periodic dethatching or topdressing from the start.

Zoysia questions from Metairie homeowners
Does zoysia make it through a Metairie winter?
Easily. LSU credits zoysia with high cold tolerance, and Metairie’s ZIP codes are zone 9b. It’ll go dormant and brown in the cool months like every warm-season grass.
How short should zoysia be mowed?
LSU’s lawn series says 1 to 2 inches, with coarse-bladed types on the higher end and fine-leaf types lower. Mow a little taller in shade.
What pests and diseases should I expect?
LSU lists billbugs, nematodes, rust and brown patch, and zoysia is also susceptible to large patch in spring and fall. Morning watering helps keep fungus down.
Can zoysia go in any month?
Warm months give it the best start. Read how we time and prep sod jobs in Metairie before you book a winter install.
