Its preferred pH, 6 to 7, falls right between River Ridge’s two main soils, so TurnKey Grass decides on zoysia one lot at a time, after a soil test.

Who is zoysia right for in River Ridge?
If your yard is open sun and gets hammered daily, Bermuda for River Ridge’s sunny lots bounces back faster. If trees cover most of it, St. Augustine on shaded River Ridge lawns is the safer bet.

- 01
Yards with partial shade
Yards with partial shade: LSU AgCenter ranks zoysia second only to St. Augustine for shade among warm-season grasses, though tolerance varies by cultivar.
- 02
Lawns that get used
Lawns that get used: Zoysia has high tolerance for wear and traffic. The catch is that it recovers slowly once it’s damaged.
- 03
Owners who’d rather mow less
Owners who’d rather mow less: LSU credits its rise in popularity to durability, low mowing needs and that deep green color.
- 04
People who can wait
People who can wait: Zoysia spreads slowly by runners, which is why sod is the usual way to establish it.

Why does zoysia need a soil test first here?
Because neither River Ridge soil sits inside zoysia’s window on its own. Schriever clay, which covers a little more than half the land, tests around pH 7.3 at the surface. Cancienne silt loam on the natural levee runs around 5.7. A test tells you which way your lot leans and how far.
The LSU AgCenter extension office for Jefferson Parish is in the same 70123 ZIP as River Ridge, and LSU’s soil lab directs homeowners there with questions. Details are on the Jefferson Parish extension office page.
Texture matters as much as pH. LSU says zoysia doesn’t like compacted soil, and its shallow roots struggle in it. Schriever is a dense clay that takes in water very slowly, so LSU’s call to till 4 to 6 inches deep before laying sod counts double on those lots. Our post on preparing a lawn for zoysia goes step by step.

How long does zoysia take to settle in?
- 01
The first two weeks
New sod laid in the growing season needs water once or twice a day. Once day 14 passes, LSU says to water less often but for longer, so roots follow the moisture down.
- 02
One to two months in
LSU says sod roots may show in 30 to 60 days. Tug a corner: if it resists, the lawn is rooting, and it’s ready for a light first feeding and its first mow on dry ground.
- 03
The first full season
Zoysia fills seams and thin spots slowly. Plugged zoysia can take 2 to 3 years to cover, which is why we lay full sod. Expect the lawn to keep thickening through its first summer.
04 · River Ridge
Keeping zoysia healthy on River Ridge lots
Thatch is the long-term threat. LSU warns you can lose a zoysia lawn to excess thatch without periodic dethatching or topdressing, and a 2007 LSU publication noted that untended zoysia lawns in south Louisiana often needed replacing after 5 to 7 years.
Zoysia also has high cold tolerance compared with other lawn grasses, so a zone 9b winter in River Ridge worries it less than St. Augustine or centipede. If you’re weighing a lower-input option for acidic levee soil, compare centipede in River Ridge.

| Care item | What LSU recommends |
|---|---|
| Mowing height | 1 to 2 inches, higher for coarse-bladed types and in shade |
| Mower | Sharp blades, ideally a reel mower, since the stiff leaves are hard to cut cleanly |
| Nitrogen | No more than 2 pounds for each 1,000 square feet yearly, applied between mid-spring and midsummer |
| Pests and disease | Watch for billbugs, nematodes, rust, brown patch and large patch |
