LSU AgCenter gives Bermuda exceptional traffic and wear tolerance and very poor shade tolerance, so in River Ridge the sun decides this grass before the soil does. TurnKey Grass lays it with our own crews.

Is your River Ridge yard sunny enough for Bermuda?
LSU says Bermuda prefers full sun and doesn’t grow well in partial or heavy shade. Before you choose it, watch the lawn through a summer day.
- 01
It’s a Bermuda yard if
The grass gets direct sun from mid-morning through the afternoon, no tree canopy blocks it, and the lawn takes real foot traffic. Bermuda spreads fast by runners above and below ground, so worn spots fill back in quickly.
- 02
It isn’t if
A big tree throws shade over part of the lawn for most of the day. LSU says Bermuda does not grow well in that kind of shade. Put St. Augustine on the shaded side of a River Ridge lot and keep Bermuda in the open.

How does Bermuda cope with River Ridge’s wet clay?
Bermuda tolerates drier soil than many lawn grasses. River Ridge’s problem runs the other way. The Schriever clay under most of the area drains very slowly and sits saturated near the surface from December through April, and LSU says winter turf decline hits hardest in poorly drained, low-lying, heavier silty clay soils.
So on a clay lot, grade is the first job. LSU’s fixes for winter decline are grading or surface drains, core aeration with sand topdressing, and deep, infrequent watering in summer. We handle the grading side during prep by filling low spots and shaping the lawn to shed water.
Soil pH needs a look too. Bermuda likes 6 to 7. River Ridge’s clay tests around 7.3 at the surface and its levee silt around 5.7, so neither is a perfect match without a soil test. Take-all root rot, which LSU calls bermudagrass decline when it strikes this grass, is favored by long rainy stretches and pH above 6.5.

What does Bermuda look like in a River Ridge winter?
Brown. LSU’s calendar puts warm-season turf dormant from about November to February, and Bermuda’s main weakness is its lack of cold tolerance. River Ridge sits in zone 9b, January nights average about 46 F, and the lawn will hold its tan color until spring warms the soil. Our post on Bermuda dormancy in Louisiana winters explains what’s normal.
If your sod goes down while it’s dormant, LSU says skip fertilizer and don’t overseed it with ryegrass that first winter.

Bermuda upkeep in River Ridge at a glance
For product types and timing, read our Bermuda fertilizer guide. Pricing depends on the yard, and our Louisiana Bermuda sod cost breakdown shows what drives it.
| Task | LSU AgCenter guidance | River Ridge note |
|---|---|---|
| Mowing | 1 to 2 inches in the growing season; a reel mower cuts it best when kept low | Mow after the clay has drained, never on soggy ground |
| Feeding | Up to 3 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet a year, mid-spring to midsummer, no more than 1 pound at a time | Let a soil test say whether lime is needed first |
| Fall armyworms | Bermuda is a common target from June to November; a lawn can be stripped overnight | Check sunny lawns often from June through November |
| Weeds | Common bermudagrass spreads by seed and is treated as a weed in other lawns | Keep a clean edge where Bermuda meets a bed or another grass |
