Who is zoysia right for in St. Rose?
Think of zoysia as the middle ground between the shade grass and the sun grass. LSU AgCenter ranks it second only to St. Augustine for shade, while giving it high wear tolerance. Here’s how that shakes out:
If the lawn sits in deep shade most of the day, St. Augustine in St. Rose still beats it. If it’s wide open and takes daily rough play, Bermuda for St. Rose sun recovers faster.

Partly shaded yards
Partly shaded yards: it grows well in sun and tolerates partial shade, though shade tolerance varies by cultivar.

Families who use the lawn
Families who use the lawn: LSU calls it highly wear tolerant, with one catch: it recovers slowly once it’s damaged.
- 03
Owners who like a low, tidy cut
Owners who like a low, tidy cut: it’s mowed at 1 to 2 inches, and its stiff blades want a sharp mower, ideally a reel mower.

Why does zoysia take longer to settle in?
Zoysia spreads slowly by stolons and rhizomes, which is why LSU says it’s most often established by sod. Laid as full sheets, it starts as a complete lawn. What takes time is the rooting underneath and the filling of seams and thin spots.
That slow growth is the tradeoff. LSU notes it hurts both establishment and recovery from wear, so a zoysia lawn needs a gentler first season than a Bermuda lawn would. Keep heavy traffic off until a lifted corner shows roots gripping the soil, which LSU puts at 30 to 60 days for sod in general.

Will zoysia grow on St. Rose soil?
LSU’s zoysia guidance asks for slightly acidic soil, ideally pH 6 to 7, and warns that it doesn’t like compact soils. St. Rose has two very different kinds of yard ground:
Prep makes the difference here. Our post on how to prepare a lawn for zoysia covers tilling and amending, and the St. Rose sod installation process explains how we handle grade on these lots.

| Soil | Where in St. Rose | Drainage | Zoysia fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cancienne silt loam | Every home address we checked | Somewhat poorly drained, wet layer 1.5 to 4 ft down in winter and spring | Workable once loosened; representative pH 5.7 may need lime per a soil test |
| Schriever and Thibaut clays | Lower ground toward the back of the community | Poorly drained, very slowly permeable | Riskier; dense, slow-draining ground works against shallow zoysia roots |
| Gramercy silty clay | Lower levee and alluvial flats | Poorly drained, very slowly permeable | Grade and loosen first, or pick another grass |

Keeping a St. Rose zoysia lawn healthy for years
- 01
Watch the thatch
Thatch builds up faster in zoysia than in most lawns. LSU warns that without periodic dethatching or topdressing you can lose a zoysia lawn to it.
- 02
Feed it lightly
Zoysia needs less feeding than Bermuda: LSU caps it at 2 lb of nitrogen annually for each 1,000 square feet, split between midspring and midsummer, with no more than 1 lb at a time.
- 03
Know its problems
LSU lists billbugs, nematodes, rust and brown patch, and it names zoysia among the grasses susceptible to large patch in the mild spring and fall weeks.
