Our crews prep the soil and lay fresh-cut sod on the silt loam levee ground that covers most of town, and on the slower silty clay in lower subdivisions, with every step planned around how your lot drains.

How do we prep LaPlace ground before the sod goes down?
Prep decides whether new sod roots or rots. Here’s the order we follow on a LaPlace lot, with the LSU AgCenter guidance behind each step.
- 01
1. Clear what’s growing now
Old turf and weeds come out first. LSU’s sod guidance starts by destroying existing vegetation, because anything left underneath competes with the new grass for water.
- 02
2. Loosen the top layer
LSU suggests tilling 4 to 6 inches deep and raking out debris. Carville silt loam, the most common soil in LaPlace, is moderately permeable. Gramercy silty clay, found on lower ground such as one LaPlace Plantation address we looked up, drains very slowly, so we wait for it to dry out before working it.
- 03
3. Shape the grade so water leaves
An older LSU publication recommends a 1 percent slope or a slight crown to head off drainage trouble. In a parish where stormwater drains by gravity toward the lakes, we fill low spots and shape the surface away from the slab so rain moves off the lawn.
- 04
4. Match the sod to the soil
LSU advises buying sod grown on soil similar to yours, since mixing soil types changes how water soaks in. We talk through the source of your sod during the estimate.

When is the right time to lay sod in LaPlace?
LSU AgCenter expects better sod establishment from April through September, when warm-season grasses are actively growing. Sod laid while dormant, roughly October through March, is more likely to dry out or suffer winter injury.
LaPlace adds two local wrinkles. January lows at the Reserve station average 42.9 F, about 3 degrees colder than the metro airport station, which sits 13 miles east of LaPlace. And the federal soil survey shows Carville ground saturated from 12 to 30 inches down between December and June, with Gramercy wet right at the surface from January into April. Winter installs here often mean working wet soil. If you need a lawn before spring, LSU’s rule for dormant sod is to lay it at least 40 days before the first hard frost, or wait until the grass is mostly brown.

What paperwork comes before digging in LaPlace?
- Call 811 first: Louisiana 811 marks buried utility lines for free before any tilling, and you can open a ticket online at louisiana811.com.
- Bringing in fill or reshaping the lot: St. John Parish’s Permit Division lists a Land Disturbance Application among its permit types. Ask the division, on the first floor of the Government Building at 1811 W. Airline Hwy., whether your plan needs one.
- Anything at the street ditch: Culvert work is a separate parish permit under Public Works and Utilities, so keep that out of a sod project unless the parish signs off.
- Flood zone questions: The parish posts its FEMA flood maps on its Flood Protection Information page, and over 87% of St. John is a FEMA special flood hazard area.

How should you water new sod in LaPlace weather?
Bermuda owners can go deeper with our posts on laying Bermuda sod step by step and how long Bermuda takes to establish. The full process is on our main sod installation page.

| When | LSU AgCenter guidance | What it means in LaPlace |
|---|---|---|
| Install day | Soak until the sod and the soil under it are both moist, without runoff | Slow-draining spots puddle fast, so water those in shorter bursts |
| Days 1 to 14 | Water 1 to 2 times a day while the grass is actively growing | July highs average 91.6 F at the Reserve station, so midsummer installs need both rounds |
| After day 14 | Water less often and longer to drive roots deeper | About 67 inches of rain falls in an average year, so skip a cycle after a soaking storm |
| Day 30 to 60 | Pull back a corner to check rooting, then feed up to 0.5 lb nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft | Start mowing once it’s rooted and the ground isn’t saturated |
