It handles wear better than any grass we lay, but it thins out fast once shade creeps in.

Is your LaPlace lot sunny enough for Bermuda?
LSU AgCenter rates Bermuda’s shade tolerance as very poor and says it doesn’t grow well in partial or heavy shade. That decides it in LaPlace, where the native forest on the town’s levee soil is mostly oaks and other hardwoods.
Walk your yard on a summer day and note where the sun hits from morning to late afternoon. Bermuda wants the full day. A front yard under one big oak and a sunny backyard can call for two different grasses, and we’re happy to lay St. Augustine in the shaded LaPlace corners and Bermuda where the light is.

How does Bermuda cope with LaPlace drainage and dry spells?
Bermuda tolerates drier soil than many turfgrasses, and the silt loams along LaPlace’s natural levee, Carville and Cancienne, give it a reasonable footing. Wet ground is the bigger threat here. The federal soil survey shows Gramercy silty clay, which turned up at a LaPlace Plantation address on lower ground, staying wet near the surface from January through April.
Two LSU notes matter on that kind of lot. Bermuda prefers a slightly acidic soil around pH 6 to 7. And take-all disease, called bermudagrass decline when it hits Bermuda, thrives in long rainy stretches, and the nearest NOAA station logs about 67 inches of rain a year. Good grading before the sod goes down does more for Bermuda here than extra watering does later.

What does Bermuda look like in a LaPlace winter?
Brown. LSU’s calendar shows warm-season turf dormant from about November through February, and LSU lists a lack of cold tolerance as Bermuda’s major limitation. The nearest NOAA station, in Reserve, averages a 42.9 F low in January, so expect a tan lawn for a few months that greens up again in spring. Our post on Bermuda dormancy in Louisiana winters explains what’s normal.
Timing matters for new sod too. LSU expects better establishment from April through September, and dormant sod laid between October and March is more prone to drying out. If you’re browning in July, that’s a different story: start with why Bermuda turns brown and how to fix it.

How do you keep Bermuda sharp on a LaPlace lot?
- 01
Mow low and often
Mow low and often: LSU’s range is 1 to 2 inches in the growing season, and LSU’s older guide favors a reel mower, especially below an inch.
- 02
Feed it in season
Feed it in season: Up to 3 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft a year, spread from midspring to midsummer, with no more than 1 lb at a time. Our Bermuda fertilizer guide goes further.
- 03
Scout for fall armyworms
Scout for fall armyworms: LSU says they commonly target Bermuda from June to November and can strip a lawn in one night.
- 04
Keep it out of the beds
Keep it out of the beds: Bermuda spreads by runners above and below ground, and common Bermuda counts as a weed when it creeps into other lawns.
