How do we prep Hammond’s silt loam before the sod arrives?

The prep is where a Hammond lawn succeeds or fails. These are the four steps we plan around, adjusted to what we find on your lot.

  1. 01

Test the soil a few weeks ahead

LSU AgCenter advises sending a soil sample several weeks before you plant. Hammond’s main soils read around pH 4.8 to 5.5 at the surface, so most grasses will want lime, and the test tells you how much. The Tangipahoa Parish LSU AgCenter office, which is in Amite, hands out sample boxes.

  2. 02

Clear the old cover and loosen the top layer

Old grass and weeds come out first. LSU’s sod guide then calls for tilling 4 to 6 inches deep, pulling debris and working in lime or fertilizer by the test results. Your estimate spells out which of those steps your yard needs.

  3. 03

Shape the surface to shed water

On Guyton ground the wet layer can sit within about 9 inches of the surface in the wet season. A slight crown or a gentle fall of about 1 percent moves rain off the lawn, and filling low spots keeps puddles from drowning the new roots.

  4. 04

Lay it the day it lands

Delays between delivery and laying cost you roots, so we schedule the two together. Pieces go down in a staggered brick pattern with tight seams, and the finished lawn gets rolled so every piece touches soil.

Do you need an 811 call or a City permit first?

  • 811 before digging: Louisiana One Call is a free service that marks buried lines; dial 811 or file online before any tilling starts.
  • Fill and regrading: Hammond’s development code requires a Site Clearing-Grading permit from the Building Department before clearing, excavation or earthwork, and before filling a lot ahead of construction. If your job brings in fill, ask the City first.
  • Protected live oaks: Live oaks 8 inches across at breast height and up are protected, and during clearing the code calls for a barrier fence out to the drip line. We keep regrading outside that line.
  • Inside city limits or not: Large areas just east and north of the built-up city sit outside city limits. The City Planning office on East Robert Street can tell you which rules apply to your lot.

When should you lay sod in Hammond?

Warm-season grass grows slowly once the soil drops below 70 F and stops below 60 F, so a spring or summer install roots fastest here.

Window What LSU AgCenter says What it means in Hammond
April to September Best establishment for sod Warm soil, fast rooting, and July normal highs of 91.5 F, so the watering has to keep up
October to March Possible, but sod is more open to drying out and winter injury Zone 9a, with a 38.3 F normal January low at the Hammond 5 E station
Late fall installs Lay at least 40 days before the first hard frost, or wait until the grass is mostly brown Skip fertilizer on dormant sod and water it now and then through winter

How do you water new sod in Hammond weather?

During the growing season, LSU AgCenter calls for watering new sod once or twice a day for the first 10 to 14 days, enough to wet the sod and the soil under it without runoff. After two weeks, water less often but longer, so the roots chase moisture downward. On Guyton ground, check before you turn the sprinkler on: if the soil under a lifted corner is still soaked from a storm, skip that round.

Roots usually take 30 to 60 days to grip. Once a corner resists a gentle tug, the lawn can take its first light feeding and its first mow, on a day the ground isn’t saturated.

Sod installation questions from Hammond homeowners

Which grass should go on my lot?

Shade and drainage decide most of it. Oak-shaded lots on the old grid lean toward St. Augustine in Hammond, while open, sunny yards suit Bermuda sod in Hammond. Our Hammond grass guide maps the options by part of town.

Will new sod survive a wet Hammond winter?

It can, if the ground drains. LSU AgCenter ties winter decline to wet, low-lying soil, which is why we spend the effort on grading. Centipede on Hammond ground is especially sensitive to wet feet.

How does the work itself go?
