TurnKey Grass lays centipede with our own crews where the soil suits it, mostly the silt loam on the old natural levee, and we’ll tell you honestly when a clay lot needs a different grass.

Centipede Sod in River Ridge: Where It Fits
Centipede sod in River Ridge can work, but only on the right lot. It wants acidic, well-drained ground, and the Schriever clay under most of River Ridge is slightly alkaline and slow to drain.

Where does centipede fit in River Ridge?
LSU AgCenter says centipede does best at pH 5 to 6, in soil with little compaction, good drainage and low fertility. Above pH 7, its leaves may turn yellow. Here’s how River Ridge’s mapped soils measure up:
Soil maps aren’t drawn lot by lot, so a soil test settles it before you buy a pallet.

| Soil | Surface pH | Drainage | Centipede verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cancienne silt loam, the natural levee | About 5.7 | Somewhat poorly drained | Workable. The pH sits in centipede’s preferred range. |
| Schriever clay, backswamp and lower levee | About 7.3 | Poorly drained, wet near the surface December to April | Poor. Both the pH and the drainage are conditions LSU flags. |
| Mixed Cancienne and Schriever, frequently flooded | 7.0 to 7.3 | Floods often | Skip it. A small strip, likely by the river levee. |

Why do people call centipede low input?
LSU notes its nickname, “lazy man’s grass,” for its lighter mowing, feeding and pest needs. That’s real, with limits worth knowing:
- 01
Light feeding, and no more
LSU sources put centipede’s yearly nitrogen at about 1 to 2 pounds per 1,000 square feet, never more than 2. LSU links overfeeding to centipede decline. Excess phosphorus can also hurt turf quality.
- 02
Low mowing
Keep it at 1 to 2 inches. One LSU specialist calls tall mowing on centipede “very dangerous,” because tall cuts and heavy thatch set it up for freeze damage.
- 03
Careful with weed killers
Centipede is sensitive to many common lawn herbicides, so read every label before you spray.

What makes centipede fail?
If your lawn is already struggling, our guide to fixing common centipede problems walks through the causes.
- 01
Alkaline fill or clay
Alkaline fill or clay: Above pH 7, expect yellowing. On Schriever clay that’s the starting point, not a risk.
- 02
Traffic and compaction
Traffic and compaction: Centipede doesn’t tolerate either, and LSU says compaction stress shows up as purple to red leaves.
- 03
Drought
Drought: It’s one of the most drought-sensitive lawn grasses around, and drought stress is linked to centipede decline.
- 04
Centipede decline
Centipede decline: LSU calls it a complex, lethal syndrome, seen as large dead or yellow patches in spring and tied to overfeeding, heavy thatch and drought.
- 05
Wet winters
Wet winters: Winter turf decline hits centipede hardest in poorly drained, low-lying silty clay, the same conditions found in low spots on River Ridge’s Schriever clay.

Centipede questions from River Ridge homeowners
Will centipede grow under my trees?
In light shade, yes. It ranks third for shade among warm-season grasses, behind St. Augustine and zoysia, and declines in heavy shade.
What should I plant on a clay lot instead?
Near-neutral clay suits St. Augustine on River Ridge clay. For a finer, harder-wearing lawn, look at zoysia for River Ridge yards once a soil test confirms the pH.
Can I seed centipede instead of laying sod?
You can, but LSU says it takes 2 to 3 years to fully establish from seed. Sod is the most common method for a reason.
