TurnKey Grass lays centipede in the city, and on the visit we’ll tell you plainly whether your ground suits it. On the wrong soil it turns yellow and goes into decline, and Harahan has a lot of the wrong soil.

Is your Harahan soil acid enough for centipede?
LSU AgCenter says centipede grows best at pH 5 to 6, and its leaves can yellow once the soil rises above 7. Harahan’s two main soils sit on opposite sides of that line.
Those are typical values, and Cancienne alone ranges from 5.1 to 7.8. If your lot was ever built up with fill, its pH could be anything. A soil test through the LSU AgCenter office serving Jefferson Parish answers the question before you buy a single pallet.

| Soil | Where it’s mapped | Typical surface pH | Centipede fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cancienne silt loam | West Imperial, toward the river end | About 5.7 | Good match on pH |
| Cancienne silty clay loam | Roseland Park and the City Hall area on Jefferson Highway | About 5.7 | Good on pH; watch low, wet corners |
| Schriever clay | Royland, Colonial Estates, Anna Terrace, Harahan Oaks, Glenwood Park | About 7.3, reaching 8.4 in places | Poor; pick St. Augustine or zoysia instead |

Where does centipede struggle in Harahan?
- 01
Foot traffic
Foot traffic: LSU says centipede doesn’t tolerate traffic or compaction, and a stressed lawn shows purple to red leaves. For a play yard, Bermuda sod in Harahan holds up far better.
- 02
Dry spells
Dry spells: LSU’s turf specialists call it one of the most drought-sensitive turfgrasses around, and drought stress is tied to centipede decline. Water it when the weather turns dry.
- 03
Low, wet ground
Low, wet ground: Winter decline hits centipede hardest in poorly drained, low-lying silty clay soil. Fix those spots in prep, or choose another grass for them.
- 04
Heavy shade
Heavy shade: It handles light shade but declines in heavy shade. Under big trees, go with St. Augustine for Harahan yards.

How do you keep centipede out of decline?
- 01
Feed it less than you think
Centipede decline is a lethal syndrome that shows up as large dead or yellow patches in spring. LSU links it to overfeeding, heavy thatch and drought. Keep nitrogen to about 1 to 2 pounds for each 1,000 square feet a year, never more than 2, and go easy on phosphorus.
- 02
Mow low
Keep it at 1 to 2 inches. LSU warns that tall mowing is risky for centipede, and tall cuts heading into fall set it up for freeze damage.
- 03
No fall nitrogen
Fall feeding and excess thatch both leave centipede more open to winter injury. It doesn’t tolerate cold well, even in a zone 9b city like this one.

Centipede questions from Harahan homeowners
Why is centipede called lazy man’s grass?
It needs less mowing, less fertilizer and fewer pest treatments than the other common lawn grasses, which is how it earned the nickname.
Can I spray weed killer on a centipede lawn?
Read the label first. LSU notes that centipede is sensitive to many commonly used herbicides.
Does centipede spread fast after it’s laid?
No. It grows slowly by stolons, which is why most centipede lawns start as sod. See our Harahan sod installation page for prep and timing.
