Sod Installation in Madisonville, Timed to the Soil

Sod installation in Madisonville comes down to timing and water: get rain off slow silt loam in winter, then get enough into new roots in summer heat.

TurnKey Grass runs the whole job here with our own crews, from the yard visit and prep to delivery, laying and the first soak.

When should you lay sod in Madisonville?

LSU AgCenter expects better establishment from sod laid between April and September. Warm-season grasses grow slowly once soil drops below 70 F and stop below 60 F, and rooting is what counts.

Madisonville adds a local reason to wait for spring. Abita silt loam, common in the residential streets, holds a seasonal water table 1 to 3 feet down from December through April. Prentiss sandy loam carries a perched water table in January through March. New sod laid on ground that’s saturated from below has a hard time sending roots down.

Winter installs can still work. LSU’s dormant-sod advice is to lay at least 40 days before the first hard frost or wait until the grass is mostly brown, and skip fertilizer on dormant sod. Madisonville’s ZIP, 70447, is USDA zone 9a, a step colder than the south shore, so a hard freeze is a real possibility.

How do we prep ground that drains slowly?

Downtown near Main Street maps as Guyton silt loam, which NRCS describes as poorly drained with slow permeability. Prep here is mostly about water.

  1. 01

    1. Test before you amend

LSU suggests submitting a soil sample several weeks before planting. Guyton topsoil typically tests near pH 4.8, so lime may be on the table, and the test tells you how much. The LSU AgCenter Soil Testing and Plant Analysis Lab runs it, and the St. Tammany Parish extension office can get you a sample box.

  2. 02

    2. Clear and loosen

Depending on the yard, we clear old grass and weeds, loosen the soil and fill low spots. Your estimate spells out which of those your lawn needs.

  3. 03

    3. Shape it to shed water

LSU’s older turf guide notes that a 1 percent slope or a slight crown can head off drainage trouble later. The town plan pushes the same idea at street scale, asking for stormwater to drain into planting areas instead of pooling.

  4. 04

    4. Match the sod to the ground

LSU advises against laying sod grown on one soil type over a very different one, since it changes how water soaks in. On the sandier Prentiss pockets in town, that’s worth a conversation before the pallets arrive.

What should you sort out before install day?

  • 01

    Utility locate

Utility locate: Call 811 before anyone digs or tills. Louisiana One Call calls it “a free service to help you dig safely.”

  • 02

    Permits and fill

Permits and fill: If the job involves bringing in fill or changing grade near the street, ask the Town of Madisonville at 209 Hwy 22 W, (985) 845-7311. The town’s online work request covers permits too.

  • 03

    A path for the pallets

A path for the pallets: Measure the gate. Narrow side yards slow the carry from the truck to the backyard.

  • 04

    Your water source

Your water source: Find the hose bibs and sprinkler zones now, so the first soak starts the minute the last piece goes down.

How should you water new sod in a Madisonville summer?

LSU’s schedule: right after laying, water until both the sod and the soil under it are moist, without runoff. During active growth, water 1 to 2 times a day for the first 10 to 14 days. After two weeks, water less often but longer, so roots chase moisture deeper.

Two local wrinkles. July highs average about 90 F at the nearest NOAA station, so a skipped day hurts. And slow silt loam ponds easily: if water sits on the surface, you’re overdoing it. The town closed its splash pad in August 2026 over drought and “excessive irrigation,” so short, even cycles beat letting a sprinkler run for an hour.

Roots usually take hold within 30 to 60 days. Pull back a corner to check. Once it’s rooted, LSU allows a first feeding of up to 0.5 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet, and the first mow can happen when the soil isn’t saturated. Our guide to installing Bermuda grass sod covers the laying itself in more detail.

Sod installation questions from Madisonville homeowners

Which grass should I put on a shaded lot near the river?

Usually St. Augustine. Our page on St. Augustine in Madisonville covers the lime and shade questions.

My yard holds water after a storm. Can you still lay sod?

Sod won’t fix standing water, and drainage installation isn’t something we do. We’ll point out the problem spots on the visit so you can decide on the grading first.

Is centipede a good fit for acidic ground here?

Often, yes, if the spot drains. See centipede sod for Madisonville yards.
