Put it under the riverfront live oaks and it’ll thin out, because LSU AgCenter rates its shade tolerance as very poor.

Where does Bermuda make sense in Madisonville?
Think new construction and infill. The town plan calls for filling empty lots with new homes, and a freshly cleared lot with full sun from morning to evening is Bermuda’s ground. LSU says it “does not grow well in partially shaded to heavily shaded areas,” so a yard with even one big oak over the lawn is a poor bet.
What you get in return is toughness. LSU credits Bermuda with “exceptional traffic and wear tolerance,” and it’s the species Louisiana uses on athletic fields and golf courses. It spreads fast by stolons and rhizomes, so worn spots fill back in. Kids, dogs and a backyard that doubles as a field are the kind of use it handles best. If your yard has real shade, look at St. Augustine for Madisonville’s shaded lots instead.

How does Bermuda handle a dry August and a wet winter here?
Dry weather is its strength. Bermuda tolerates drier soil than many turfgrasses, which counted for something in August 2026, when the town closed its splash pad over drought and heavy irrigation across town. Established Bermuda in a dry spell does well on a deep soak once or twice a week instead of a daily sprinkle. Our post on how often to water Bermuda goes deeper.
Wet weather is where Madisonville’s soil comes in. Guyton silt loam, the soil mapped near Main Street downtown, drains slowly, and Abita silt loam holds a high water table from December to April. Take-all root rot, called bermudagrass decline when it strikes Bermuda, is favored by long rainy spells and soil pH above 6.5. Bermuda’s preferred pH is 6 to 7, so test before you lime, and keep the grade moving water away.

What does Bermuda look like in a Madisonville winter?
Brown. LSU’s calendar shows warm-season turf going dormant from about November through February, and Bermuda’s “lack of cold tolerance” is its major limitation. Madisonville’s ZIP sits in USDA zone 9a, where the average annual extreme low is 20 to 25 F, and January nights at the nearest NOAA station average about 40 F. It greens back up as the soil warms in spring. Read more in does Bermuda go dormant in Louisiana winters.
Laying it late in the year? LSU’s dormant-sod rule is to finish 40 or more days ahead of the first hard frost, or hold off until the grass has mostly browned, and to skip ryegrass overseeding that first winter.

Bermuda questions from Madisonville homeowners
How short should Bermuda be mowed?
LSU recommends 1 to 2 inches during the growing season. Its older turf guide adds that a reel mower is the right tool, especially below 1 inch.
What chews up Bermuda in late summer?
Often fall armyworms. LSU says they target Bermuda from June to November and can ruin a lawn in a single night with 4 or more generations a year.
How much nitrogen does it want?
LSU’s Home Lawn Series allows up to 3 lb per 1,000 square feet a year, from midspring to midsummer, no more than 1 lb per feeding. Our Bermuda fertilizer guide covers the products side.
What does Bermuda sod cost?
It depends on the yard and the prep. Our Bermuda sod cost guide for Louisiana breaks down the market numbers, and your own price comes after a yard visit.
