Our crews lay all four warm-season grasses in town, from the small front yards of the historic shotgun blocks by the river to the roomier lots in the subdivisions that grew after the 1958 bridge.

Sod and Lawn Grass for Gretna Yards
Sod in Gretna almost always goes onto clay. Schriever clay, Harahan clay and Westwego clay cover most of the city’s land, and the Harahan series itself was described from a site off Gretna Boulevard.

Which part of Gretna is your yard in?
Plot the federal soil survey across the city and three bands show up, running roughly parallel to the Mississippi. Each one asks something different of a new lawn.
- 01
The river end: Old Gretna and McDonoghville
Closest to the levee, the ground is mostly Schriever clay, a shrink-swell soil with very slow permeability, plus a strip of Cancienne silt loam on the natural levee. Schriever’s surface pH typically reads 7.3, on the alkaline side for turf. Yards here run small. The National Register district counts 737 structures, more than half of them shotgun houses, most set close together and fairly close to the street. McDonoghville, part of Gretna since 1913, has modest homes on sizeable lots.
- 02
The middle of town
In the central band of the city, about 84 percent of the sampled ground is a single backswamp clay. Its official series description was written from a site in Gretna, near Gretna Boulevard. The water table usually sits 12 to 36 inches down, and the surface pH runs near 6.2, a comfortable number for most lawn grasses.
- 03
The south end
The southern band is mostly Westwego clay. Subdivisions such as Timberlane and New Garden Park grew in the south after the river bridge opened in 1958. That soil lies 2 to 3 feet below sea level over buried organic layers and drains very slowly. Nobody has mapped subdivision lines against the soil, so a test on your own lot settles which band you’re really in.

Which grass fits which Gretna yard?
Torn between two? Our guide to choosing a grass type for your climate and lifestyle walks through the trade-offs in plain terms.
| Grass | Gretna yards it suits | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| St. Augustine | Shaded yards anywhere in town; the mid-town and south-end pH sits close to its ideal of about 6.5 | Take-all root rot on alkaline river-end clay |
| Bermuda | Open, full-sun lots that get heavy use | Very poor shade tolerance, so skip it on lots in a tree’s or a neighbor’s shadow |
| Zoysia | Sunny to partly shaded yards where you want a dense, hard-wearing turf | Shallow roots that struggle in compacted ground, and nearly all of Gretna is clay |
| Centipede | Low-input lawns on the more acidic ground, like the silt loam by the river | Winter decline on poorly drained low ground |

What sets Gretna yards apart on the West Bank?
- Its own water system: Gretna Waterworks, run by the city, draws from the Mississippi River and earned a “B” grade for 2023. Public Utilities also lists irrigation meter fees, worth a question before you water a new lawn daily.
- City-run drainage: Public Works maintains the drains and asks residents to keep fertilizers and chemicals out of the drainage system. Sweep stray granules off the sidewalk after you feed.
- Historic lots: In the historic district, exterior changes visible from the street can need Historic District Commission review, so ask the Building Department before a big front-yard project.
- A lot of rain: NOAA’s Gretna station averages about 64 inches a year. On slow-draining clay, grading the lawn to shed water is part of planning it.

How we handle a sod job in Gretna
Every job starts with a free yard visit. We look at sun, low spots and the route from the street, then talk through which grass fits. If you’d like a soil test first, the LSU AgCenter Jefferson Parish office can point you to sample boxes. Prep depends on the yard: clearing old grass and weeds, loosening soil and filling low spots, and your estimate spells it out.
The step-by-step job is on our page for sod installation in Gretna, and the company-wide process lives on the main sod installation page.

Ready to plan a Gretna lawn?
Tell us which part of Gretna you’re in and how many hours of sun the yard gets, and we’ll come measure it. We’ll check the grade, the shade and how water leaves your lot, then recommend one of the four grasses. The estimate is free. Book your yard visit, or call (504) 608-1540.
