Sod Installation in Gretna, Laid on Slow-Draining Clay
Sod installation in Gretna means laying new turf on clay that drains very slowly, and on some older river-end lots every roll has to travel down a narrow side passage to reach the back.

How do you prep a Gretna yard for sod?
All of Gretna’s main soils are clays that federal soil scientists rate as poorly drained with very slow permeability. Water that pools on the surface won’t soak away quickly, so on these lots most of the prep effort goes into grade. Amendments come second.
LSU AgCenter’s sod guidance is to remove existing vegetation, till 4 to 6 inches deep, pull out debris, then shape the ground for drainage and roll it lightly so it holds that contour. An older LSU publication adds that a 1 percent slope or a slight crown heads off drainage trouble later. Here, that slope has to carry water toward the street or a drain and away from the slab. LSU also warns against laying sod grown on one soil type over a very different one, since it changes how water moves through the root zone, so ask us about the source when we quote.

What has to happen before the pallets arrive?
- 01
Get utility lines marked
Louisiana One Call takes locate requests at 811 or through its online homeowner access, and LSU tells homeowners to have lines marked before any tilling. Call 811 before anyone digs.
- 02
Test the soil a few weeks ahead
LSU suggests sending a sample several weeks before planting. Gretna’s surface pH swings from acidic near the levee to alkaline on the river-side clay, so the result tells you whether lime or fertilizer belongs in the prep.
- 03
Ask the city before trucking in fill
We didn’t find a Gretna rule written for fill or regrading, so call the Building Department at 504-363-1563 before soil gets delivered. In the historic district, exterior work seen from the street can also go before the Historic District Commission.
- 04
Plan the route from the truck
Many river-end homes sit close together and near the street, so the way to a backyard can be one side passage. LSU says to lay sod as soon as possible after delivery, because delays lead to poor rooting or dead sod, so we line delivery up with the crew.

What month should you lay sod in Gretna?
LSU AgCenter expects better sod establishment from April through September, while warm-season grass is growing hard. Gretna summers are hot: the Terrytown 3S weather station, a short way past the city line, records July and August highs near 92 F, so the first two weeks of watering can’t slip.
Cool-season installs can work too. Sod laid from October to March is dormant and more prone to drying out and winter injury. Warm-season grass slows below 70 F soil temperature and stops below 60 F, and the average January low nearby is about 45 F. LSU’s rule for a dormant install is to lay at least 40 days before the first hard frost, or wait until the grass is mostly brown, and hold the fertilizer until spring.

How should you water new sod in Gretna?
Gretna Waterworks bills by the gallon above a monthly minimum and offers irrigation meters, so ask Public Utilities whether one fits your account before the daily watering starts.
- 01
Install day
Install day: Soak until the sod and the soil under it are both moist, stopping before water runs off.
- 02
Days 1 to 14
Days 1 to 14: In the growing season, water once or twice a day. On slow-draining clay, lift a corner first, and if the soil underneath is already soggy, skip a round.
- 03
After two weeks
After two weeks: Water less often and longer, so the roots follow moisture down.
- 04
After a downpour
After a downpour: The Gretna rain gauge averages about 64 inches a year. Treat a heavy storm as a watering and let the clay dry a little before the sprinklers come back on.

Sod installation questions from Gretna homeowners
Will new sod fix a yard that holds water?
No. Sod sits on top of the problem. On Gretna’s clay, standing water has to be handled with grade before the sod goes down, and we’ll point out low spots on the visit. We don’t install drains, so if a yard needs one, we’ll say so.
Can you lay sod on a small shotgun-lot yard?
Yes. A narrow front strip takes less sod, though the cuts around steps and walks take care. Shady strips do better in St. Augustine, and open sunny ones can take Bermuda. Owners who want a slow-growing, low-feed lawn on acidic ground can look at centipede, and our walkthrough of how Bermuda sod goes down shows the laying steps up close.
When can I mow and feed the new lawn?
Once the sod has rooted and is growing, on soil that isn’t saturated. LSU says roots may show in 30 to 60 days; pull back a corner to check. That’s also the time for a first light feeding, no more than 0.5 lb of nitrogen for each 1,000 square feet.
