It wants acidic, low-fertility soil, and most of LaPlace sits on calcareous levee silt that tests neutral to alkaline, so we ask for a soil test before we’ll lay it.

Why does soil pH decide centipede in LaPlace?
LSU AgCenter says centipede prefers a soil pH of about 5.5. Above pH 7, its uptake of nutrients including phosphorus, iron, manganese, boron and zinc may drop, and the leaves can yellow.
Now look at what the federal soil survey shows for LaPlace. Carville silt loam, the soil under the largest share of town, is calcareous with a representative surface pH of 7.8. Cancienne silt loam, which turned up at addresses in Woodland Plantation, Belle Pointe Plantation and along Belle Terre Boulevard, averages a slightly acidic 5.7, though its range runs from 5.1 to 7.8.
So centipede is a poor default for LaPlace and a real option only where a test shows acid ground. The LSU AgCenter’s Soil Testing and Plant Analysis Lab runs the test, and the St. John Parish extension office in Edgard can point you to sample boxes. LSU’s sampling advice is 15 to 20 small samples taken in a zigzag and mixed together.

Where does centipede fail in LaPlace?
- 01
Alkaline levee silt
Alkaline levee silt: On Carville ground with a pH near 8, centipede is fighting the soil from the day it’s laid.
- 02
Low, wet silty clay
Low, wet silty clay: LSU says winter decline hits centipede hardest in poorly drained, low-lying, silty clay soils. In LaPlace that describes Gramercy ground, like the LaPlace Plantation address we checked.
- 03
Heavy foot traffic
Heavy foot traffic: Centipede doesn’t tolerate traffic or compaction. Purple to red leaves are LSU’s sign of that stress.
- 04
Dry spells without water
Dry spells without water: LSU calls it one of the most drought-sensitive turfgrasses around, and drought stress is tied to centipede decline.

What is centipede decline, and how do you avoid it?
LSU describes centipede decline as a complex, lethal syndrome that shows up as large dead or yellow patches in spring. Overfeeding, heavy thatch and drought are the usual suspects. The fixes are mostly restraint:

- 01
Feed lightly
Feed lightly: Keep nitrogen to roughly 1 to 2 lb for each 1,000 sq ft in a season, and never past 2. LSU also warns that excess phosphorus can hurt centipede.
- 02
Mow low
Mow low: Keep it at 1 to 2 inches. One LSU turf specialist calls tall mowing very dangerous for this grass.
- 03
Skip fall feeding
Skip fall feeding: Tall cuts, thick thatch and fall nitrogen all set centipede up for more freeze damage, and the Reserve station averages a 42.9 F January low.
- 04
Read herbicide labels
Read herbicide labels: Centipede is sensitive to many common weed killers.

How does centipede compare with the other grasses on LaPlace ground?
| Grass | pH LSU prefers | On alkaline Carville silt | On wet Gramercy clay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Centipede | 5 to 6 | Poor fit | Prone to winter decline |
| St. Augustine in LaPlace | About 6.5 | Better fit, watch for take-all | Workable with grading |
| LaPlace Bermuda sod | 6 to 7 | Test first; LSU’s range tops out near 7 | Needs drainage first |
| Zoysia for LaPlace lawns | 6 to 7 | Test first | Struggles on compacted ground |
Have acidic ground in LaPlace? Centipede might be your low-care lawn
