Much of town sits on Carville silt loam, which usually tests neutral to alkaline, above zoysia’s preferred pH of 6 to 7, so we test first. For a part-shade yard with steady foot traffic, it’s a durable grass that grows in slowly.

Who is zoysia right for in LaPlace?
- 01
Yards with partial shade
LSU AgCenter ranks zoysia second only to St. Augustine for shade among warm-season grasses, though it varies by cultivar. A yard with a few hours of tree shade and good sun the rest of the day is zoysia territory.
- 02
Lawns that get walked on
LSU credits zoysia with high wear and traffic tolerance. The trade-off is recovery: once it’s worn through, it grows back slowly.
- 03
Owners who mow with care
The stiff blades are hard to cut cleanly without a sharp mower, and LSU advises a reel mower. The usual height is 1 to 2 inches, a little higher in shade.
- 04
People who plan for thatch
Zoysia builds thatch, and LSU warns that without periodic dethatching or topdressing you can lose a zoysia lawn to it. Put that on the calendar from year one.

Which LaPlace soils suit zoysia?
Soil structure matters more for zoysia than for most grasses, because LSU says it doesn’t like compacted soil and its shallow roots struggle there.
LSU puts zoysia’s ideal pH at 6 to 7. The federal survey gives Carville a representative surface pH of 7.8 and Cancienne 5.7, and individual yards vary widely around those numbers. A soil test through the LSU AgCenter settles it. If zoysia doesn’t fit your ground, St. Augustine is the shade-friendly LaPlace alternative, and full-sun lots can look at Bermuda sod in LaPlace.

| LaPlace soil | Where it showed up | Zoysia fit |
|---|---|---|
| Carville silt loam | The most common soil in town, including a LaPlace Heights address | Workable; test pH first, since the survey’s representative value is alkaline |
| Cancienne silt loam | Addresses in Woodland Plantation and Belle Pointe Plantation | Good candidate; slightly acidic on average, close to zoysia’s preferred range |
| Gramercy silty clay | A LaPlace Plantation address on lower ground | Harder sell; very slow to drain and wet at the surface January through April |

Why does zoysia take longer to settle in?
LSU describes zoysia as a slow spreader through stolons and rhizomes, which is why it’s most often established from sod. Plugged zoysia can take 2 to 3 years to fill in, so sod is the practical route for a finished look.
Rooting is the real test. LSU’s general guide for sod is roots in about 30 to 60 days, checked by pulling back a corner. Hold off on heavy play until it’s anchored. Our article on preparing a lawn for zoysia walks through the ground work, and the LaPlace sod installation guide covers timing and permits.

Zoysia questions from LaPlace homeowners
Will zoysia survive a LaPlace winter?
Yes. LSU rates zoysia’s cold tolerance high compared with other turfgrasses. The Reserve weather station, the closest to LaPlace, averages a 42.9 F January low, and zoysia handles that well. It will still go brown while dormant.
How much fertilizer does zoysia need?
Less than Bermuda. LSU’s Home Lawn Series caps it at 2 lb of nitrogen yearly for each 1,000 sq ft, in feedings of 1 lb or less, from midspring to midsummer.
What pests should I look for?
LSU lists billbugs, nematodes, rust and brown patch on zoysia, and large patch can show up when nights turn mild in spring and fall.
