It spreads slowly and dislikes compacted soil, which matters on the Slidell soils that carry a dense fragipan underneath.

Who is zoysia right for in Slidell?
Zoysia sits between the other three grasses. It won’t take deep shade, and it won’t race across bare ground. But it does several things well at once:
If your yard is mostly shade, St. Augustine for Slidell shade is the safer choice. If it’s all sun and all play, look at Bermuda for open Slidell lots.

Partly shaded yards
Partly shaded yards: Morning sun and afternoon shade from a water oak or a line of pines is zoysia territory. How much shade it takes varies by variety.
- 02
Yards that get used
Yards that get used: LSU rates its wear and traffic tolerance high. It recovers slowly, though, so a worn path stays worn for a while.
- 03
Cold snaps
Cold snaps: LSU credits zoysia with high cold tolerance compared with other turfgrasses, a plus in a zone 9a city where January lows average near 42 F.
- 04
Dry stretches
Dry stretches: It tolerates dry soil better than other common turfgrasses, useful in a dry spell, even in a city that averages about 66 inches of rain a year.

Why does Slidell’s subsoil matter for zoysia?
LSU says zoysia does not like compact soils, and its shallow roots struggle when the ground is packed. That’s a real concern here. Stough fine sandy loam, which covers about 30% of the city, carries a dense fragipan from about 15 inches down. Prentiss soil has one too, deeper, from about 26 inches.
LSU’s prep depth of 4 to 6 inches stays well above that layer. What helps is loosening the top few inches well before the sod goes down, then keeping heavy equipment and parked trailers off the lawn afterward, so the surface layer stays open.
pH is the other half of prep. Zoysia likes slightly acidic soil, ideally pH 6 to 7. Slidell topsoil runs about 5.0 to 5.3, so most yards need some lime. Our zoysia lawn prep guide walks through the steps.

How long does zoysia take to settle in?
Longer than Bermuda or St. Augustine. Zoysia spreads slowly by stolons and rhizomes, which is why sod is the usual way to start it. Laying full sod gives you a finished look on day one, but the seams and the roots knit together at zoysia’s own pace.
Treat the first growing season gently. Keep heavy play off it until a pulled corner resists, and don’t judge it by how fast a neighbor’s Bermuda filled in. Then plan for the long run:

- 01
Thatch control
Thatch control: LSU says thatch builds especially in zoysia. LSU’s older guide says south Louisiana zoysia lawns often needed replacing after 5 to 7 years when nobody dethatched them.
- 02
A sharp mower
A sharp mower: The stiff blades tear under a dull one. LSU suggests a reel mower and a height of 1 to 2 inches.
- 03
Light feeding
Light feeding: No more than 2 lb of nitrogen for each 1,000 square feet in a season, closer to centipede than to Bermuda.

Zoysia questions from Slidell homeowners
Can zoysia grow under pines?
In partial shade, yes. Under a dense canopy, no grass does well, zoysia included. We check sun hours on the visit before recommending it.
Which pests bother zoysia?
LSU lists billbugs, nematodes, rust and brown patch, and its large patch fact sheet names zoysia as susceptible. LSU advises early-morning watering to limit large patch.
Is zoysia worth the slower start?
For many families, yes. You get shade tolerance and wear tolerance in one grass. If you’d rather not dethatch, compare it with the other options on our main zoysia sod page.

A zoysia lawn built for your Slidell yard
Zoysia pays off when the prep is right: loose topsoil above the hardpan, the pH brought up, and a grade that sheds Slidell’s rain. We’ll check all three on a free visit and lay the sod ourselves. See our Slidell service area page for the bigger picture. Book your free estimate.
