LSU rates its cold tolerance high, the best of the four grasses we lay, and January nights at NOAA’s Covington 4 NNW station average about 40 F. It prefers pH 6 to 7, so on the city’s acidic sandy loam it usually goes down after a soil test and lime.

Who is zoysia a good fit for in Covington?

Zoysia sits between the shade lover and the sun lover. It’s right for you if one or more of these sounds like your yard:

  • Part shade, not deep shade: LSU AgCenter ranks zoysia second to St. Augustine for shade, with results that vary by cultivar. A lot with an oak on one side and open sun on the other is classic zoysia ground.
  • Steady foot traffic: LSU calls it very wear-resistant. The catch: it recovers slowly once it’s damaged.
  • Cold snaps: LSU’s zoysia sheet credits it with high cold tolerance compared with other turfgrasses. Covington’s normal January low is about 40 F, and zone 9a’s average coldest night of the year is 20 to 25 F.
  • A sharp mower: The stiff leaves tear under a dull blade, and LSU advises a reel mower. Mow at 1 to 2 inches, a little higher for coarse-bladed types.

How does zoysia handle Covington’s acidic, compact-prone ground?

Two soil issues matter for zoysia here.

  1. 01

    pH below what zoysia wants

LSU puts zoysia’s ideal pH between 6 and 7. Covington’s main soils run about 5.0 to 5.5 at the surface in federal soil data, so expect lime, applied from a soil test and not by the bag count on the label.

  2. 02

    Compaction

LSU says zoysia does not like compact soils, because its shallow roots struggle in them, and that compaction happens more often on fine-textured soils. Abita silt loam, roughly a seventh of the city, is that kind of soil, with slow permeability and a seasonal water table that rises to within 1 to 3 feet of the surface from December to April. Stough ground adds a dense layer underneath. The City’s own low-impact development materials push for minimizing soil compaction in landscaped areas, and zoysia benefits from it. Our guide on preparing a lawn for zoysia goes deeper on loosening and grading.

03 · Covington

Why does zoysia take longer to settle in?

Zoysia spreads slowly through runners above and below ground. LSU notes that plugged zoysia can take 2 to 3 years to fill in, and it names sod as the most common way to establish it. Even from sod, gaps between pieces close slowly, so tight seams at install matter more than with faster grasses.

Lay it in the warm months: LSU expects better sod establishment from April through September. Keep heavy use off it until it roots, which LSU puts at 30 to 60 days for sod in general. Our sod installation work in Covington covers prep and watering for this soil.

Zoysia against the other choices on a Covington lot

If the shade is heavier than part shade, St. Augustine in Covington is the safer bet. If the yard is wide open and hammered by play, Bermuda on sunny Covington lots recovers faster.

Keeping a zoysia lawn healthy

  • 01

    Thatch control

Thatch control: LSU warns you can lose a zoysia lawn to excess thatch without periodic dethatching or topdressing.

  • 02

    Light feeding

Light feeding: LSU caps zoysia near 2 lb N per 1,000 sq ft yearly, split between spring and summer feedings.

  • 03

    Pest watch

Pest watch: LSU lists billbugs, nematodes, rust and brown patch, and zoysia is susceptible to large patch.
