TurnKey Grass sells, delivers and lays St. Augustine, Bermuda, zoysia and centipede sod across this river town with our own crews.
Some streets sit on acidic silt loam that stays wet through winter, and others run up against swamp and marsh soil, so the right grass can change from one block to the next.

What kind of ground is your Madisonville yard on?
Lay the town limits over the NRCS soil survey for St. Tammany Parish and two families show up. Much of the land inside the limits is swamp and marsh that rarely gets built on. The streets people actually live on are a patchwork of older, acidic terrace soils, cut here and there by wetter backswamp ground. Downtown near Main Street maps as Guyton silt loam.
Soil series
How it drains
Typical top-layer pH
What it means for new sod
Guyton silt loam
Poorly drained, slow to absorb water
About 4.8
Lime for most grasses, and a grade that moves rain off the lawn
Abita silt loam
Somewhat poorly drained; water table 1 to 3 feet down from December to April
About 5.5
Spring and summer installs root best, once the winter water table drops
Prentiss fine sandy loam
Moderately well drained
About 5.0
Better drained than Guyton or Abita, still acidic
Barbary mucky clay and Allemands muck
Very poorly drained, frequently flooded
Barbary about 6.5
Standing water comes first; sod can’t fix it

Which sod suits which part of town?
Sun, soil and how the yard gets used narrow it down fast. Here’s how the four grasses line up against the conditions you’ll find around Madisonville.
01
Under the old live oaks near the river
The town’s own plan prizes the riverfront for its mature live oaks and pictures streets shaded by trees. Canopy like that points to St. Augustine sod for shaded Madisonville lots, the most shade-tolerant warm-season grass LSU AgCenter rates.
02
Open, cleared lots in full sun
The plan calls for infill housing on empty lots, and a cleared lot with no trees is where Bermuda grass in Madisonville earns its keep. It takes heavy play and dry weather, but it needs full sun.
03
Yards with some shade and some traffic
Zoysia sits between the two. It handles partial shade and foot traffic, though it spreads slowly and dislikes compacted silt loam. Read our notes on zoysia lawns in Madisonville before you choose it.
04
Acidic ground that drains
Centipede wants a pH of about 5 to 6, which matches the sandy loam pockets here without much lime. It hates wet feet, though. See where centipede works in Madisonville.

Why does water shape every lawn in this town?
Madisonville’s master plan says the town “is in the coastal zone, and many properties are subject to powerful storm surge and flooding.” Residents ranked reducing the threat from flooding 6th of 20 priorities, and the plan asks for permeable ground and curbs notched so stormwater drains into planting areas. A lawn on slow silt loam has to shed water in a wet winter.
Then summer can flip it. In an August 17, 2026 notice, the town closed its splash pad, citing drought and “excessive irrigation going on throughout the Town.” So the same yard that ponds in a wet winter can dry out in a summer drought. The nearest NOAA normals station, about 9 miles north-northeast, averages 62.51 inches of rain a year.
Yard walk first: We measure, count the hours of sun and look for spots that hold water before we price anything.
02
Soil test before lime
Soil test before lime: Top-layer pH here runs from the high 4s to the mid 6s, so we suggest an LSU AgCenter soil test instead of guessing.
03
811 before digging
811 before digging: Louisiana One Call marks utility lines for free; call 811 before any tilling starts.
04
Town questions go to Town Hall
Town questions go to Town Hall: Permit questions go to Town Hall on Hwy 22 W, and the town’s online work request form covers permits.
