Choosing the Right Sod for Hammond Yards

Sod in Hammond goes down on flat, acidic silt loam that stays wet through winter and spring, so the grass you pick has to suit that ground before it suits your taste.

What kind of ground sits under a Hammond lawn?

We checked 29 points inside city limits against the USDA soil survey for Tangipahoa Parish. Four soils came up again and again, all of them silt loam or fine sandy loam on old Pleistocene terraces. None of them is a clay. Treat the shares below as a guide from a small sample, since the survey maps soils by acre and we counted points.

bermuda grass sod
Soil How often it showed up Drainage Surface pH (typical) What it means for sod
Guyton silt loam About half the points, including the Southeastern Louisiana University area Poorly drained, wet within about 9 inches in the wet season 4.8 Grade for runoff and test before you lime
Abita silt loam About a quarter, including downtown Somewhat poorly drained, water table 1 to 3 feet down from December to April 5.5 The friendliest ground in town for most grasses
Myatt fine sandy loam About 1 point in 7, mostly in low, flood-prone units Poorly drained, saturated in winter and spring 5.3 Expect soggy spots after heavy rain
Brimstone with Guyton A small pocket, including a west Hammond point Poorly drained 6.8 for Brimstone Subsoil high in sodium, so a soil test matters here

Which grass suits which part of Hammond?

Your street tells us a fair amount before we ever pull out a tape measure. Here’s how the four grasses we install line up with the city’s different kinds of lots.

grass installation
  1. 01

    The historic grid around downtown

When Charles Emery Cate laid out Hammond, he drew a grid of roughly 320-foot blocks and planted oaks along the curbs. Historic neighborhoods such as Hyer-Cate and the Iowa Addition sit right beside downtown, and wherever curb oaks still stand, the yard under them is in shade. Shade is where St. Augustine sod for shaded Hammond lots earns its place, with centipede as a lower-input option where the shade is light.

  2. 02

Near the university and on Guyton ground

Our spot check near the university landed on Guyton silt loam, the wettest and most acidic soil in our sample. Centipede in Hammond likes that acidity, but every grass here needs the low spots filled and the surface shaped to shed water first.

  3. 03

    Subdivisions outside the original grid

Hammond’s master plan describes the growth beyond the old core as pods of housing built around the car. Lot shade varies a lot out there. Where a yard gets full sun most of the day, Bermuda for sunny Hammond yards or zoysia on Hammond lots will take the wear of kids and dogs.

  4. 04

    Low ground toward the creeks

The city drains to Ponchatoula Creek, the Yellow Water River and Selsers Creek, which feed the Natalbany River. About a third of our soil points fell in units the survey calls occasionally flooded. LSU AgCenter says St. Augustine and centipede are the grasses most often hit by winter decline in wet, poorly drained soil, so grading matters more than grass choice on these lots.

What makes Hammond yards different from the south shore?

  • 01

    Colder winters

Colder winters: Every Hammond ZIP we checked is USDA zone 9a, and the NOAA normal January low at the Hammond 5 E station is 38.3 F. Grasses with weak cold tolerance feel that.

  • 02

    Acidic ground

Acidic ground: Typical surface pH runs about 4.8 to 5.5 on the main soils, lower than St. Augustine, Bermuda or zoysia prefer and close to centipede’s sweet spot.

  • 03

    Plenty of rain

Plenty of rain: The Hammond station’s normal is 62.21 inches a year, and July alone averages 6.84 inches.

  • 04

    Protected live oaks

Protected live oaks: The City’s development code protects live oaks 8 inches in diameter at breast height and larger, so a lawn plan works around the big trees.

How we handle a Hammond sod job

We start with a yard visit, measure the lawn and match the grass to your sun and soil. We’ll recommend a soil test through the LSU AgCenter lab before any lime goes down; the Tangipahoa Parish extension office in Amite can help you with sampling. Before anyone digs, the utility lines get marked through 811. For the step-by-step job, see our page on sod installation in Hammond, or read how the whole sod installation service works.
