Covington’s topsoil sits around pH 5.0 to 5.5, right where LSU AgCenter says centipede does best, and it needs less fertilizer than any grass we lay. Drainage is the catch here, so we check it first.

01 · Covington

Why does centipede like Covington’s acidic soil?

LSU AgCenter describes centipede as the grass for acid soils with low nitrogen, and puts its ideal pH between 5 and 6. Above pH 7 the leaves can turn yellow. An LSU AgCenter article quoting T. Koske adds that it survives at pH 5 and prefers the higher fives.

That lines up with Covington’s ground. The federal soil survey reports surface pH of about 5.0 to 5.3 for Myatt and Stough, the two most common soils in the city. Where St. Augustine, Bermuda and zoysia usually need lime here, a centipede lawn may need little or none. Run a soil test anyway; the St. Tammany Parish extension office on N. Florida Street is the place to start. LSU’s nickname for centipede, “lazy man’s grass,” comes from how rarely it needs mowing, feeding and pest work.

Where does centipede struggle in Covington?

Centipede is easy on the right yard and miserable on the wrong one. Four situations to steer clear of:

  • Low, wet ground: LSU’s 2026 winter decline sheet names centipede and St. Augustine as the grasses hit most often in poorly drained, low-lying soils. Myatt, about a third of the city, is poorly drained, and the soils mapped as frequently flooded along the Bogue Falaya, the Tchefuncte and the creeks carry the same risk.
  • Heavy traffic: LSU says centipede does not tolerate traffic or compaction, and compacted turf shows it with purple to red leaves. A yard that doubles as a ball field wants Bermuda for Covington’s sunny lots.
  • Deep oak shade: It takes light shade but declines in heavy shade. Under a live oak canopy, Covington St. Augustine sod holds on longer.
  • Alkaline fill: If a builder brought in fill that tests above pH 7, centipede may yellow. Test the fill too, not just the native soil.

What is centipede decline, and how do you avoid it?

LSU calls centipede decline a complex, lethal syndrome: large dead or yellow patches that show up in spring. It’s tied to overfeeding, heavy thatch and drought. Covington’s soggy winters don’t help, so the rest is up to how you care for it.

  1. 01

    Feed it lightly

LSU’s numbers vary between publications, so the safe rule is about 1 to 2 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft a year, never more than 2. Go easy on phosphorus too; LSU notes excess phosphorus hurts centipede most.

  2. 02

    Keep the mower low

Mow at 1 to 2 inches. LSU’s Koske calls tall mowing very dangerous for centipede.

  3. 03

    Water through dry spells

Centipede is one of the most drought-sensitive turfgrasses, per LSU, and drought stress is linked to decline. Water deeply whenever a dry spell sets in, even though NOAA’s Covington station averages about 62.5 inches of rain a year.

  4. 04

    Skip fall fertilizer

Tall cuts, thick thatch and fall nitrogen all set centipede up for more freeze damage, and Covington is zone 9a. Our post on fixing common centipede grass problems covers what to do if patches appear.

Centipede questions from Covington homeowners

Can I add fill under my live oak before the sod goes down?

The city’s own tree-protection guidance says to avoid cut, fill and trenching in a tree’s critical root zone, and live oaks 6 inches across or larger must be protected during clearing and construction. Centipede also thins out in heavy shade, so the ground under a big oak is usually better left as it is. Our centipede sod service page sets out where this grass belongs.

Does a Covington winter hurt centipede?

It can. LSU says centipede does not tolerate cold, and January nights at the Covington 4 NNW station average about 40 F. The lawn goes tan from roughly November to February; a short cut and no fall feeding help it come through.

What month should we lay it?

Aim for the warm stretch. LSU reports better sod establishment from April through September, which matters for a grass that spreads this slowly. Our page on laying sod in Covington covers prep and watering on these acidic terrace soils.
