Bermuda Sod in Covington for Sunny, Busy Lots

Bermuda sod in Covington belongs on open, sunny lots that take a beating from kids, dogs and backyard games. LSU AgCenter rates its shade tolerance very poor, so it’s the wrong pick under live oaks.

Does your Covington lot get enough sun for Bermuda?

Bermuda prefers full sun. LSU AgCenter says it does not grow well in partly or heavily shaded areas, and LSU’s slide handout lists the lack of shade tolerance as one of its major limits.

A quick test: on a summer day, note when direct sun first hits the lawn and when it leaves. If an oak blocks most of the afternoon, Bermuda will thin out under it. Covington protects its live oaks, with a City permit needed to remove any tree over 6 inches in trunk diameter and the biggest live oaks preserved outright, so clearing shade for a Bermuda lawn is rarely on the table. For shaded ground, look at St. Augustine for Covington’s shady yards, or zoysia in Covington for part shade with traffic.

How does Bermuda handle Covington’s wet winters and dry spells?

Better than you might think on the soil side. The federal soil description for Stough, about a quarter of the city, notes that cleared and drained areas of it are used for bermudagrass and bahiagrass pasture. LSU adds that Bermuda tolerates drier soil than many other turfgrasses, which helps in a dry stretch.

The weak point is standing water. Myatt soil, Covington’s most common, drains poorly and can hold water within about 8 inches of the surface in winter and spring. Bermuda laid on a flat Myatt yard needs prep that moves water off the lawn. Then there’s pH: LSU’s Bermuda sheet puts the optimum at 6 to 7, and Covington’s surface soils run about 5.0 to 5.5, so a soil test and lime usually come before the sod.

What does Bermuda look like in a Covington January?

Brown. LSU’s calendar shows warm-season turf dormant from November through February, and Bermuda goes tan and stays that way until spring warms the soil. Covington is zone 9a in all three ZIP codes, and the NOAA station north of town averages a January low near 40 F with highs around 61 F.

LSU names lack of cold tolerance as Bermuda’s major limitation, though it still ranks above St. Augustine and centipede on LSU’s cold chart. Don’t feed it while it’s dormant, and don’t panic at the color. Our post on whether Bermuda goes dormant in Louisiana winters explains what to expect in March.

What does Bermuda ask of you in return?

LSU AgCenter calls Bermuda a high-maintenance choice. Here’s the work that comes with that wear tolerance:

  • 01

    A low cut

A low cut: Mow at 1 to 2 inches in the growing season. LSU’s 2007 turf guide recommends a reel mower, especially below 1 inch.

  • 02

    Regular feeding

Regular feeding: No more than 3 pounds of nitrogen on each 1,000 square feet over the year, spread from midspring to midsummer, never over 1 pound at once. See picking a fertilizer for Bermuda.

  • 03

    An eye out for armyworms

An eye out for armyworms: LSU says fall armyworms commonly target Bermuda from June to November and can wreck a lawn overnight.

  • 04

    Edging

Edging: Bermuda spreads fast by runners above and below ground. Common Bermuda that creeps into beds or a neighbor’s St. Augustine gets treated as a weed.

Bermuda sod questions from Covington homeowners

What does Bermuda sod cost?

It depends on the yard and the prep, so we price after a visit. For market context, read Bermuda sod cost in Louisiana.

How soon can the family play on it?

LSU says sod roots can appear in 30 to 60 days. Our post on how long Bermuda takes to establish covers the weeks in between.

Can I plant Bermuda from seed instead?

Only the common type. LSU notes hybrid Bermudas are sterile and can’t be seeded, which is why they go in as sod or plugs. Our Bermuda grass service covers both the grass and the install.
