It’s the only one of our four grasses that prefers acid soil, ideally pH 5 to 6, and Slidell’s sandy loam topsoil tests around 5.0 to 5.3. It’s for owners who want a low-input lawn, not a playing field.

Why does centipede suit Slidell’s native soil?
LSU AgCenter describes centipede as popular for low maintenance and for its ability to grow in acid soils with low nitrogen. That’s a close match for Myatt and Stough fine sandy loam, the two soils under most of Slidell. Where St. Augustine, Bermuda and zoysia usually need lime to reach pH 6 or higher, centipede often needs little or none.
It’s been called the lazy man’s grass for good reason. It needs less mowing, less fertilizer and fewer pest treatments than the others. But low input isn’t the same as no attention, and a Slidell centipede lawn can fail in a few predictable ways.

Where does centipede fail in Slidell?
- Raised or filled lots: Centipede likes acid soil, and LSU says its leaves can yellow above pH 7. If your yard was built up with brought-in fill, test it before choosing centipede.
- Heavy traffic: It doesn’t tolerate foot traffic or compaction. Purple to red leaves are the stress sign. A yard full of kids and dogs belongs to Bermuda in a sunny Slidell yard.
- Low, wet corners: LSU says centipede is one of the grasses most often hit by winter decline in poorly drained, low-lying soil. About 13% of Slidell’s mapped soil is Myatt classed as frequently flooded.
- Dry summers: LSU’s turf specialist calls it one of the most drought-sensitive turfgrasses around. On Slidell’s sandy loam, plan on regular summer watering anyway.
- Deep shade: It tolerates light shade and declines in heavy shade. Under a full canopy, St. Augustine is the shade grass for Slidell.

What is centipede decline, and how do you avoid it?
LSU calls centipede decline a complex, lethal syndrome. It shows up in spring as large dead or yellow patches, and it’s tied to overfeeding, heavy thatch and drought. Nearly all of it comes down to how the lawn is kept:

- 01
Feed it sparingly
LSU’s figures range from about 1 to 2 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet a year, and more than 2 can bring on decline. Go easy on phosphorus too, since an excess can lower centipede quality.
- 02
Keep it short
Mow at 1 to 2 inches. One LSU specialist calls tall mowing very dangerous for centipede, and tall cuts also leave it more open to freeze damage.
- 03
Skip fall fertilizer
Fall nitrogen, along with excess thatch, conditions centipede for winter injury. In a zone 9a city with January lows near 42 F, that matters.
- 04
Water through the dry weeks
Drought stress is part of the decline picture. Deep, infrequent summer watering beats short daily sprinkles.
Centipede is also sensitive to many common herbicides, so read the label before treating weeds. More fixes are in our guide to common centipede grass problems.

Centipede questions from Slidell homeowners
Will centipede grow without lime in Slidell?
Often, yes. It survives at pH 5 and prefers the higher fives, and Slidell’s main topsoils read about 5.0 to 5.3, so a soil test may call for little or no lime. Pick up a sample box at the St. Tammany Parish extension office and let the LSU lab confirm it.
How slowly does it fill in?
It spreads slowly by stolons, which is why sodding is the usual start. Laid as sod, you get full cover right away and steady rooting after.
Is centipede salt tolerant?
No, LSU calls it salt sensitive. Slidell’s own plan places brackish and saline marsh only on the city’s far southern fringe, which is marsh, not lawn, so for most yards this never comes up.
