Where in Gretna does centipede have a chance?

LSU AgCenter says centipede wants acidic soil, ideally pH 5 to 6, and its leaves can yellow above 7. Federal soil maps put Gretna’s ground at several points on that scale:

LSU’s turf advice adds that centipede survives at pH 5, prefers the high fives and does fine at 6.7, just lighter green. Only a test of your own lot settles where you stand.

Large oak tree shading a green lawn
Part of town Main soil Typical surface pH Centipede fit
River end, natural levee Cancienne silt loam 5.7 Closest to its preferred range
River end, lower ground Schriever clay 7.3, up to 8.4 Typical reading is above 7, too alkaline
Middle of town Backswamp clay first described in Gretna 6.2 Just above its ideal range, still workable
South end Westwego clay 6.2 pH workable, drainage is the worry

Why is low ground a risk for centipede?

Centipede is one of the two grasses most often hit by winter turf decline, and LSU says it’s worst in poorly drained, low-lying, silty clay soils. Gretna’s south end is Westwego clay that sits 2 to 3 feet below sea level and drains very slowly. LSU’s fixes are core aeration with sand topdressing, grading or surface drains, and deep, infrequent summer watering.

Compaction is the other risk. Centipede doesn’t tolerate traffic or compaction, and stressed turf turns purple to red. A yard that doubles as a play area or a parking spot belongs in a tougher grass, such as Bermuda in full sun or zoysia with some shade.

How little does centipede need?

When something does go wrong, our guide to fixing common centipede problems walks through the usual causes.

  • 01

    Nitrogen

Nitrogen: About 1 to 2 lb per 1,000 square feet a season, never more than 2. Overfeeding is linked to centipede decline, a lethal syndrome that shows up as dead or yellow patches in spring.

  • 02

    Phosphorus

Phosphorus: Go easy. LSU notes excess phosphorus can lower turf quality, especially in centipede.

  • 03

    Mowing

Mowing: Keep it at 1 to 2 inches. Tall cuts and heavy thatch set it up for freeze damage.

  • 04

    Fall feeding

Fall feeding: Skip it. LSU says fall nitrogen leaves centipede open to more winter injury.

  • 05

    Weed control

Weed control: Read every label first, since centipede is sensitive to many common herbicides.

How does centipede handle Gretna’s summers and shade?

Dry spells are its weak point. An LSU turf specialist calls centipede one of the most drought-sensitive turfgrasses around, and drought stress is tied to decline. July and August highs average about 92 F at the nearest NOAA temperature gauge, so water deeply when the rain stops, even in a city that averages about 64 inches a year.

For shade, it takes light shade and declines in heavy shade, ranking third behind St. Augustine and zoysia on LSU’s list. Under big trees, St. Augustine for Gretna yards is the safer call.
